DINNER-FAIL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,011, dated February 2, 1892.

To all whom it may/concern.-

Be it known that I, HORACE B. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Owego, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dinner Pails or Buckets; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings represents a longitudinal vert-ical section of a dinner pail or bucket, showing the application of my improved fastening device thereto; Fig. 2, an end View thereof, and Fig. 3 a similar view showing a modification of the fastening device.

The present invention has relation to that class of dinner pails or buckets composed of a plurality of detachable and removable sections; and the object of the invention is to provide a fastening device connected to the outside of the sections that will securely hold them together and prevent any one of them being disconnected from the other and removed, or access obtained to the interior of any section without first removing the cover at the top of the bucket or pail, which object I attain by a fastening device constructed substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawingsI have shown a dinner bucket or pail of the usual construction, which consists in the present instance of three separable sections A B C, each having flanges a to overlap the section below it, the upper one of said sections being' provided with a suitable handle or bail D and a cover E, the latter having a iiange Z2 to iit over the top of the upper section. .This cover is detachably connected to the upper section by means of an eye-plate c, depending from the flange b and engaging a pin d upon the up per section, and the cover may be securely fast# cned or closed by a suitable padlock c, hasp f, and staple g, or by any other'preferred and well-known means found best adapted to the purpose. to one of the separable sections of the pail or bucket, so that the arm will extend upon the outside thereof, said arm having a hook Z or any suitable lateral extension that will engage with the rim or edge of the section immediately above it in order to lock the sections together when the cover is closed, any suitable and well-known means that will attain this purpose coming within the scope of my invention. In Figs. l and 2 of the drawings is shown a number of these arms connected to each side of the pail or bucket; but, if preferred, a single arm upon each side may be used, as shown in Fig. 3, in which case the arm should be of sufficient length to extend from the lower to the upper section. Wherever the end of these arms engage with the rim or edge of the section, the section above it or, as in Fig. 3, the iiange of the cover has a corrugation, as shown atm, so that the ange will iit over the end of the arm when closed down upon it, and when the cover is securely fastened it will be impossible to obtain access to the interior of any one of the sections without first removing the cover. These arms, which may be variously modified and either of wire or sheet metal, constitute the fastening devices, which are the feature of the invention. One of many forms of these arms I have shown, which in the present instance consists of wire of the required length, bent upon itself, and the lower ends extending out laterally and terminating in pivot ends 71, which engage with eyes c' of a plate k, which plate is suitably secured to the section of the pail or bucket. Although I have shown this as one of many ways of connecting the arms to the section of the pail or bucket, whereby a hinged or pivoted joint is obtained, it is not absolutely necessary that the arms be pivoted or hinged, as the arms may be constructed of spring-wire and rigidly secured to the section; or the arms may be of sheet metal of sufficient spring or elasticity, so that the arm may be sprung out laterally for the purpose of disengaging the upper end of the arm with the rim or edge of the section immediately above it, thus serving the same purpose of the arm when hinged or pivoted as hereinbefore described. Therefore one means is considered an equivalent of the other in having the same object in View.
