HAN D-VISE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,000, dated February 2, 1892.

To all whom it puny concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK J. TOMEK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Vises, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of my invention are to have a hand-vise which can easily be released from the article which it is holding by the same hand which holds the body of the vise, thus leaving the other hand free to grasp the article held by the vise, and also to enable the operator to release the article quickly, and thus save time which is consumed in releasing Vises of the old pattern.

My invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts herein described and claimed.

I attain the objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my vise with the jaws of the vise open. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing the position of the parts when the jaws are closed. Fig. is a detached view of the release-lever D.

Ais an ordinary hand-vise having a handle and spring-jaws of the ordinary form.

B is a bolt provided with a thumb-nut O with which to screw the jaws of the vise to gether.

P is a peg or projection extending from the body of the bolt B, and by coming in contact with the inner surface of the lower jaw of the hand-lever prevents the bolt B from coming out of the vise.

E is another pin or projection projecting from the body of the bolt B and serves to hold the bolt B in place when the thumb-nut l is screwed down by impinging on the surface of the release-lever D and to release the lower jaw of the hand-vise A when it drops into the recess F. The recess 13 is preferably formed by an inclined plane on the outer rim of the head of the release-lever D. The head of this lever D has a hole through it, as seen in Fig. 3, for the reception of the bolt B, and is flanged, so as to receive the head of the bolt 13. The head end of the bolt B is provided with a feather b, which is adapted to move in and out in a groove in the jaw of the vise, which prevents the bolt B from turning by the movement of the thumb-nut O. This turning of the bolt, however, may be overcome by making the head end of the nut square where it enters the jaw of the vise.

It is obvious that when the pin E is placed at the point E on the release-leverD and the article to be held is placed between the jaws of the hand-vise and the thu mb-nut O screwed down, and the operator wishes to hold the article held by the handlever with his nippers and release it from the hand-vise, all he has to do is to press the release-lever around with his thumb or finger of the hand with which he holds the hand-vise until the pin E falls into the recess F when it is released and the other hand secures it. This is of great advantage to watch-makers and other persons working with small articles, as they can hold them with nippers in one hand and release them with the other, and thus avoid losing them.

Now what I claim, and for which I ask Letters Patent of the United States to be granted me, is

1. Ahand-vise consisting of a pair of springjaws, a bolt and nut binding them together, and a release-lever arranged along the jaw of the hand-vise and having an offset or recess, into whichaprojection on the bolt is adapted to drop when the release-lever is pressed to one side, whereby the jaws of the hand-vise are released by the same hand which holds the hand-vise, for the purposes specified.

2. In a hand-vise, a movable lever provided with an oitset or recess, said recess being adapted to receive a pin or projection on the bolt binding the jaws of the hand-vise, a bolt passing through the jaws of the hand-vise and provided with a projection at the head end of the bolt, adapted to engage the surface of the movable lever and drop into the recess when said lever is turned to one side, and the jaws of a hand-vise, all combined, substantially as described, and operating to permit the article held by the vise to be released by the same hand which holds the vise.
