CAR-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,839, dated January 26, 1892. Application filed May 19, 1891. Serial No. 393,295. (No model.)
.TOVCLZZ whom it may concern; coupling-link l3, and on the chamber a the Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. TRINE, of shoulders c are formed by asuitable contrac- Pierre, in the county of Hughes and State of tion in vertical width of the throat or en- South Dakota, have invented a new and usetrance to the chamber mentioned, which 5 ful Improvement in Oar-Con plin gs, of which shoulders are in the same vertical plane. 55 the following is a full, clear, and exact de- A transversely-ccntral longitudinal slot (Z scription. is formed in the top wall of the draw-head,
This invention relates to an improved caraligning its front terminal with the shoulders coupling which is safe in its manner of con- 0, and on the sides of said slot two similar nection with a similar device, the object beears 6 are erected of sufficient proportionate 6o ing to provide a simple, secure, and easilysize to afford a stable connection for a lever operated car-coupling that may be coupled O and locking-pin Z) with the draw-head automatically and be released from the platbody. The slot (1 is shorter than the charm form or roof of the car. her a below, which it intersects, thus al- To these ends my invention consists in the lowing a part of the top wall of the drawconstruction and combination of parts, as is head to remain, which overhangs forwardly hereinafter described and claimed. of the rear wall of the chamber, as at g.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying The locking-pin Z) is of such proportionate drawings, forming a part of this specification, size as will allow it to vibrate freely in the 20 in which similar letters of reference indicate slot (Z, its length adapting it to engage the corresponding parts in all the views. overhanging portion or web g of the draw- Figure l is a broken longitudinal partly head top wall with its free lower end portion sectional side View of two couplings embodywhen the pin is swung to give it the position ing the improvement, showing one coupling shown in Fig. 1 at the right side of said view,
25 supporting a link that is entered within the and when pendent said pin is located in a adjacent coupling and about to be engaged longitudinal groove d in the bottom wall of by its pin. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal partly the draw-head, in which it swings to assume sectional side view of two of the improved avertical position. The lever C, (before mencouplings in coupled condition. Fig. 3 is a tioned,) which aitords support for the pin 1),
0 broken plan view of two connected couplings and means to operate it also, consists of a embodying the improvements, one coupling metal bar that is flattened laterally where it being broken away on its upper side foris inserted between the cars a of the drawwardly. Fig. 4: is a front end view of the head, havinga knuckle-jointed connection at improved coupling. Fig. 5 is a cross-section h with the upper end of the locking-pin Z),
5 of the coupling draw-head on the line 5 5 in which joint is formed on the edge of the lever Fig. 3. Fig.6 is a detached perspective View near the end i, that is preferably rounded of a coupling pin and a lever connected edgewise. therewith that is part of the improvement; At a proper distance from the top wall of and Fig.7 is aside View of an end portion of the draw-head opposite perforations m are 40 acar-body, showing the improvement thereon. formed in the ears e for the reception of a ful- 0 The draw-head A of the improved carcrum-bolt n, which latter may be of any coupling is chambered at its front end a proper form, and in the leverG an elongated proper width to admit the couplinglink 13 hole a is produced transversely atasuitable loosely, said chamber a extending longitudidistance from the curved edge t of the lever 5 nally within the draw-head to allow the link end to secure aproper action of the connected to enter far enough for its engagement with parts, said hole extending lengthwise of the a pendent locking-pin l), as will be further lever above the joint h. 1 explained. The body of the lever C, when the draw- The front edges of the draw-head A are head is in position on a car-frame, as shown 50 flared to allow of the free introduction of the in Fig. '7, projects toward the car front wall G, and is connected loosely at its inner terminal 0 with an upright rod I, that extends to the car-roof for manipulation therefrom.
In service when two approaching drawheads having the improvements thereon are to be coupled the link B, of usual form, isheld projected from one draw-head by the pin Z), which is adjusted, as shown in Fig. 1, on the right-hand draw-head, the engagement of said pin with the web 9 of the draw-head and the end of the link B on its upper side holding the link projected, as its body lies upon the lower shoulder c of the draw-head A when such an adjustment is effected. The impingement of the projecting end of the link B on a pendent pin 1) of the draw-head to be coupled swings said pin rearwardly until it slides over the link end and falls into locked connection with the shoulders c and link end, providing the lever O is prostrate, as shown in Fig. 2. By providing the elongated hole n in the lever-head forits engagement with the f ulcrumbolt 92 the adj ustment of the pin end, as shown in Fig. 1, to engage a link end is permitted, and when coupled with a link the draft strain upon the latter will slide the pins b, so as to impinge on the shoulders 0, thus avoiding the necessity for a link of more than ordinary length to effect an attachment of two cars automatically.
When cars having the improvement are to be disconnected, the simple elevation of one of the levers C will draw the pin 19 into the positionshown at the left side of Fig. l and allow the link B to be freely Withdrawn from the draw-head A, which can be'effecte'd by a manipulation of the lever directly or through the rod I, as may be most convenient.
Strength, simplicity, practicability, and etficiency in service are claimed as features pertaining to this device, which will couple cars of the same or diiferent heights from the track equally well.
In the ears e opposite grooves e are formed of a proper depth laterally in the inner faces of said ears to receive the body of an ordinary coupling-pin, and in the lower wall of the draw-head A a circular hole 6 that aligns with the grooves, is formed.
The provision of the grooved ears and apertured lower draw-head wall-is for the purpose of allowing an ordinary cylindrical couplingpin to be used it the pin b and lever G should be. disabled or broken off by accident, this provision converting the improved draw-head into one of the usual style as far as connection with others is considered.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 1. The combination, with aforwardly-chambered draw-head having a flared front end and a top and bottom shoulder within the throat of said chamber and also slotted above to align with spaced ear-s thereon, of a pendent locking-pin and a lever longitudinally slotted and pivoted therein between the ears to which the pin is jointed, substantially as set forth. I r
2. The combination, with a forwardly-chambered draw-head having a flared front end, two opposite aligning shoulders formed above and below in the throat of the draw-head chamber, a slot longitudinally extended from the shoulders rearward in the top wall of the draw-head chamber, leaving a transverse web therein, and two spaced ears laterally perforated to receive a fulcrum-bolt and located in alignment with the sides of the slot, of a lever having a cam-rounded head and ears on one side to pivotally engage the upper end of a pendent locking-pin and further provided with an elongated hole for engagement with the'fulcrum-boltin the ears, said hole-extending in the direction of length of the lever, a
locking-pin, and means to manipulate the lever from the roof of a car, substantially as set forth.
