Description
(No Model.) Q v D. B. DANIELS. NUT LOOK;
No. 467,002. Patented Jan. 12-, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID B. DANIELS, OF LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,002, dated January 12, 1892.
Application filed January 21, 1891. Serial No. 378,555- (No model.)
' citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Charles, in the parish of Oalcasieu and State of Louisana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 7
and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of nut-locks wherein the nuts are locked together upon the bolt by means of keys; and it has for its object to improve, simplify, and cheapen the cost of construction of this class of devices over the existing prior state of the art.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claim. 7
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the inner faces of the nuts, showing two grooves cut diagonally across the corners in each of the nuts. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the nuts shown in Fig. 1 when screwed home upon the bolt, the grooves in each nut aligning with each other, forming a channel for the passage of the key. Fig. 3 is a View of the key or keeper, and Fig; 4 is a view of the bolt.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A and A designate two nuts of the ordinary or any approved construction, having cut in any direction across the inner faces of the nuts one or more grooves a a; but in this example the grooves are cut two in each nut diagonally across the corners of the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. These grooves are so cut that the inside edges of the grooves will intersect across the threaded opening of the nut. These nuts, when their inner faces are placed together in their normal position and screwed home upon a bolt, which will be hereinafter mentioned, the grooves in the nuts will come in alignment with each other and present a channel between the two for the reception of a key or keeper b. (Shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.)
B designates the bolt upon which the nuts are locked, the bolt having its thread cutout at one side near the smaller end thereof, between which and the threads of the nuts the key is inserted and by which the parts are immovably locked together and all liability of loosening or displacement avoided.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of my device will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lock-nut consisting of two separate parts having grooves across their inner or meeting faces, and keys or splines for uniting said parts by engagingsaid grooves, in combination with a bolt having depressions in'its threaded portion with which the keys or splines also engage for locking the parts together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID B. DANIELS.
