. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REINIIOLD G. LEDIG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAM P -SHADE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,861, dated January 12, 1892. Application filed March 10,1891. Serial No. 384A. (No model.)
1'0 a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REINHOLD G. LEDIG,a citizen of the United States, residing in the clt-y and countyofPhiladelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Shade Holders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Myinvention consists of alamp-shade holder having ribs, which may be folded in compact form andreadilyadjustedandfirmlysustained when required to support the shade.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a lamp-shade holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a ring or collar, which supports the ribs B, the latter having on their inner ends the eyes 0, through which the Wire D is passed, said Wire being attached to said ring, the ribs thus being pivotally connected to the ring.
Depending from the inner ends of the ribs are pieces which form shoulders E, said pieces being also attached at bottom to the ribs intermediateof the ends thereof bybraces F, whereby the ribs are stiffened and strengthened.
Within the ring A is fitted a vertically-sliding sleeve G,'the same being of greater length than the ring and having slots H, through which pass the heads J, which connect the upper ends of the guards K of the holder with said ring, said slots thus permitting the sleeve G to pass said heads in its rising and falling motions. The lower ends of the guards are connected with the bottom collar L in any suitable manner.
In the outer face of the sleeve are vertical grooves M, which receive the shoulders E of the ribs when the latter are in operative position to sustain the lamp-shade, thus steadying said ribs, as will be seen in Fig. l, where it will be noticed that the sleeve Gis lowered and forms abearing for said shoulders. When the ribs are to be closed or folded, the sleeve is raised, whereby it. slides away from the shoulders E, and as said latter are no longer controlled by the sleeve the ribs drop, and, remaining pendent from the wire D, they assume somewhat vertical positions around the guards K, as will be seen in Fig. 2, so that the holder may be packed, stored, transported, &c. WVhen it is required to open the ribs, the sleeve is lowered, whereby it passes below the ring, and its bottom edge presses against the shoulders E and forces the same outwardly, so that the ribs turn on the Wire D as an axis and assume the position shown in Fig. 1, when the shade may be held thereon, it being noticed that the ribs are prevented from closing or dropping owing to the controlling action of the sleeve on the shoulders The descent of the sleeve is limited by the contact of the top rim of said sleeve with the ring A, or the upper walls of the slots II with the heads J, or both. The ribs, With their eyes, shoulders,
and braces are preferably formed each of a continuous piece of wire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Alamp-shade holder consisting of a ring having ribs pivoted thereto, a sleeve movable within said ring and having vertical slots and guards having the ends thereof passed through said slots of the sleeve, and means, substantially as described, for detachably engaging said ribs and sleeve, said parts being combined as stated.
2. A ring with ribs mounted thereon and a sliding sleeve fitted to said ring and adapted to move below the same and having vertical grooves therein, said ribs having shoulders which are adapted to engage the vertical grooves in the sleeve, whereby as the sleeve is lowered it presses against the shoulders and throws out the ribs, and when said sleeve is raised it leaves said shoulders, thus permitting the ribs to close or fold, substantially as described.
3. A lamp-shade holder consisting of upper and lower collars and guards connected therewith, said upper collar being formed With vertical grooves, a sliding sleeve fitted to the upper collar, and ribs mounted on the upper collar having shoulders on their inner ends, said shoulders engaging said grooves of the upper collar and said sleeve being vertically of greater length than the upper collar, where by it may engage with the ribs in order to open and sustain the same, substantially as described.
4. In a lamp-shade holder, substantially as described, a sliding sleeve fitted to the upper collar, and ribs mounted on said collar adapts ed to be engaged by said sleeve, the latterbe ing provided with slots for the passage of the fastenings for securing the guards to the upper collars, as set forth.
5. In a lamp-shade holder having opening and closing ribs, substantially as described, and having depending shoulders on the inner ends thereof, and a sleeve provided with vertical grooves to receive the depending shoulders on the inner ends of said ribs when the latter are opened, as set forth.
6. A lamp-shade holder having a ring with ribs pivoted thereto, depending pieces forming shoulders for said ribs, and braces connected with the bottom of said depending pieces and to the ribs intermediate of the ends thereof, said parts being combined substantially as described.
7. A lamp-shade holder consisting of a ring or collar, ribs supported thereon and having eyes at their inner ends, a Wire passing through said eyes and attached to said ring, pieces depending fl'Ol'Il said ribs forming shoulders, braces attaching said pieces and ribs, a sliding sleeve Within said ring and of greater length than the same, and guards with heads connected to the ring, said sleeve having slots to receive said heads and grooves in its outer face to receive said shoulders, said parts being combined substantially as described.
