FIGLE...
HE m u \A/ITN Ess'Esm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMUZETT ALONZO WARNE, on FREELAND, onto, ASSIGNOR or ONE-THIRD TO ABRAM HOWELL, on SAME PLACE.
RAI LWAY-Tl E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,732, dated January 5, 1892.
Application filed August 26, 1891- Serial No. 403.815. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMUZETT ALONZO \VARNE, of Freeland, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make [0 and use it, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in railway-ties; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to construct a tie which will be very durable, not being subject to decay as the ordinary wood tie, and
which will, be very cheap and simple in constrnction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tie. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line a. a: of Fig. 2. Fig.
4: is a sectional view on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
A represents two end blocks which support the weight of the track and which are formed of burned clay. Before the clay is heated the blocks are given the desired shape and constructed with the openings B, so as to allow the heat to thoroughly penetrate the blocks, after which operation the said openings are filled with cement or other matter. These blocks are provided with the horizontal slot 0 on their upper faces and also the vertical openings D. The ends of the bar E are adapted to rest in the slots (1, and each of the ends is provided with a downward projection F, which enters the opening D and which is securely held therein by a wedge G. The lower ends of these projections F are pro vided with inturned projections F, which .5 push inward and engage a shoulder formed in the wall of the recesses D. By this construction the bar is more securely held in place on the blocks. Extending downward from the under side of the bar E are the clamping projections H,which are constructed with claws H at their lower ends, which engage the inner ends of the blocks A. These projections may be made to bend outward and to engage the block by a single blow from a hammer. The opposite ends of the upper face of the barE are provided with a claw or projection I, which engages the outer flange of the track. The fastening J is made removable and is secured to the bar by a bolt K.
IVhile wood or iron blocks could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention, yet I prefer the blocks formed of clay, as they are not subject to either decay or rust, and can be furnished at a comparativelysmall cost. 5
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a cross-tic, the end blocks, the horizontal bar, projections on the under side of the bar, which enter openings in the blocks, and wedges for securing the said projections 111 place, the parts being combined substantially as shown and described.
2. In a cross-tie, the blocks provided with depressions in their upper faces, a horizontal bar which rests in the said depressions, projections on the said bar which enter openings in the blocks, and the clamping projections H, the parts being combined substantially as shown and described. 8c
3. In a cross-tie, the blocks provided with depressions in their upper faces, a horizontal bar adapted to rest in the said depressions, projections F, which enter openings in the blocks, wedges for securing the said pro ections in the openings, clamping projections H, which engage the inner ends of the blocks, and track-fastenings on the upper face of the bar, the parts being combined substantially as shown and described. 9
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AMUZETT ALONZO \VARNE.
