' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. CHAMBERLIN, OF WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHlNE FOR TIGHTENING THE CASINGS OF OIL, GAS, OR WATER .WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,653, dated January 5, 1892.
Application filed February 5, 1891- Serial No. 380,390 (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES GAsWELL CHAMBERLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashi-ngton, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine for the Tightening of Casings in Oil, Gas, or Water \Vells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates, particularly, to an improved apparatus for tightening the joints of casings for oil, gas, or water wells after the said casinghas been jointed and arranged in the well.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus of this character that shall be exceedingly cheap and simple in construction and thoroughly efficient in operation.
WVith these objects in View my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts, all of which will be fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved device, the casing-tube being shown partly in elevation; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improvement and shows the manner of connecting the same with the easing-tube to be tightened.
Referring to the drawings, D indicates a section of casing-tube, and upon said tube is secured a horizontal bearing -collar B by means of the set-screws O C. Resting upon this collar B and encircling the tube D is a wheel A, the periphery of said wheel being beveled or inclined upwardly and outwardly, as shown, and at the lower edge of said periphery is produced a laterally-projecting flange a. The wheel A is provided with a hub or bushing G, which rests upon the col lar I3, and said hub can be removed and replaced by one of different thickness when it is desired to fit the wheel upon differentsized tubes. A cleat F is secured to the upper face of the wheel A, by means of which the tube and said wheel are connected by means of a rope B. This rope has a knot r p at one end and a loop r at the opposite end.
In making the connection the knotted'end is placed upon the tube, the rope wrapped able hub, the rope several times around the tube and knotted end, and the looped end is then attached to the cleat F, thus frictionally connecting the tube and wheel, so that as the wheel A revolves the tube will also revolve, tightening the casing.
In order to revolve the wheel A, I wind several coils of rope E around the same, said rope passing over and receiving power from the power-wheel of the derrick. (Not shown.) The flange on the wheel prevents the rope dropping off, and the incline of the periphery prevents the rope rising above the wheel.
From the above description it will be seen that I provide a cheap and simple means for revolving the tube-casin g, thereby tightening the parts of the same.
Having thus described my I claim as new is- 1. The combination,\vith a tube, of a revoluble wheel frictionally connected therewith and adapted to revolve the tube in unison with said wheel, and means for revolving the wheel, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a tube, of a revoluble wheel supported upon the tube and frictionally connected therewith, and means for revolving the wheel, substantially as shown and described.
8. The combination, with a tube, of a bearing-collar, the revoluble wheel, and frictional connection between said wheel and tube, substantially as shown and described.
4t. The combination, with a tube, of a revoluble wheel, the cleatsecured thereon, and the rope having a knot at one end and aloop at the other end, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with a tube, of a collar secured thereon, the wheel having a beveled periphery and lateral flange, the detachhaving a knot at one end and a loop at the other end, the cleat attached to the wheel, and the rope wound upon said wheel, substantially as shown and described.
