JOHN T. THOMPSON, OF JAYNESVILLE, MISSISSIPPI.
CU LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,383, dated January 5, 1892.
Application filed August 29, 1891. Serial No. 404,129. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.- 1
Be it known that I, JOHN T. THOMPSON, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at J ayn esville, in the county of Simpson and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exvcultivator in which the shovels or teeth shall be reversible and in which their shanks shall be firmly held in place.
I form the main body of the cultivator of a single piece of metal provided with substantially right-angled bends, in which the shanks of the shovels or teeth are held, the said shanks being preferably held by longitudinal strips or bands, which all unite at their forward ends to form the beam or draft-bar. This makes a light, cheap, easily-constructed frame, and still one that has been found to be Very strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention in the present instance resides in the peculiarities of construction and the combinations, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is atop plan of the Same with the handles removed.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views where they occur.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the main portion of the frame, which consists of asingle'piece of metal set upon edge and formed in any suitable manner, as by bending, with a plurality of right-angle bends a, as shown in the drawings.
B are the shanks of the shovels or plows. They are held one in each of the inner angles of the said piece A, as shown, so as to have two bearings, one upon the side and one upon the edge, as will be readily understood. The manner of securing these shanks in the angles may be varied; but I have shown what I at present consider the preferable way. It consists of the longitudinal fiat strips O, which are arranged upon edge and bent at their rear ends, as seen at b, one portion lying flat against the longitudinal portion of the piece A at the angle and the other embracing the upper end of the shank, with the rear end of the strip bearing against the inner or front face of the transverse portion of the piece A at or near the angle or bend.
The strips 0 and shanks are secured together by the bolts D, which pass therethrough and are provided with nuts E, by which they may be adjusted when desired. The strips are secured to thepiece A where they lie in contact therewith in any suitable manner, as by rivets or analogous provisions 0.
The strips 0 are extended forward, where they all unite and form the beam or draft-bar F, the handles G being secured therebetween in any suitable manner, and at the extreme front ends there is secured a clevis or drafthook or other suitable provision f, to which the draft isvapplied. The handles are suitably braced by uprights H, which are secured thereto and to the outside strips 0.
The shanks carry the shovels or plows I, which are formed with differently shaped points, which are designed to be reversed, when desired, by simply loosening the retaining-bolt g.
\Vhat I claim as new is The cultivator described, consisting of the piece A, formed with right-angle bends, the shanks having their upper ends arranged in the angles of the bends, the longitudinal strips having their rear ends bent to embrace the said shanks upon two sides and bolted thereto and t0 the piece A forward of the shanks, and thus holding the shanks in place in the said angles and extended forward, and TO the draft appliance held to the forward ends of said strips, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN '1. THOMPSON. Witnesses:
T. L. MENDENI-IALL, D. O. MOINNIS.
