Description

(No Model.) B; RTON,
ATTACHMENT FOR ANVILS.
Patented Dec. 29, 1891.
illlillll .ziltorn y f V i I v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC BLOOMFIELD WVHARTON, OF LIMA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO GEORGE HALL, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT FOR ANVILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,208, dated December 29, 1891. Application filecl May 25, 1891. Serial No. 394,036- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
B e it known that I, BLOOMFIELD WHARTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Anvils and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments for anvils.
The object of the invention is to provide a clamp or vise for an anvil actuated by footpower, by means of which horseshoes and other articles being worked on the anvil may be securely held, so as to enable the operator to perform his work in an efficient and satisfactory manner. 7
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an anvil and block, showing my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of a portion of the anvil with the clamping-lever detached. Fig. 4 is an edge View of the clamping-lever.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the anvil-block, and 2 the anvil, both of which may be of any ordinary orsuitable construction. To the base of the anvil, at one side thereof, is pivoted a lever 3, the pivot-pin 4 of which is screw-threaded at its inner end and inserted in a correspondinglythreaded hole in the anvil. The upper end of this lever is provided with a clamping-plate 5, while its lower end has formed in it an elongated slot 6. Pivoted at or near its center in a bracket 7, secured to the anvil-block, is a foot-lever 8, having at one end a foot-plate 9, the other end being bent over, formingaloop 10, which embraces the lower portion of the clamping-lever 3, and in this loop is journaled a roller 12, which works in the slot 6 of said clamping-lever.
The anvil-block is provided at its lower portion with a rack-bar 13, with the teeth of which the foot-lever can engage to hold the sameiu place when depressed to clamp an article to the anvil. I
At the upper side of the anvil, opposite the clamping-plate on the lever 3, is secured a plate 14, having its outer face beveled from the lower to the upper side, as seen in Fig. 1. Both the plates 5 and 14 should be serrated, so as to tightly hold the articles placed therebetween.
The operation will be readily understood. The articles to be clamped or held are placed between the clamping- plates 5 and 14 and pressure applied to the free end of lever 8 by the foot or otherwise, which will cause the lower end of lever 3 to be forced outward and its upper end inward, thus firmly holding the article between the clamping-plates.
Instead of the clamping-lever being pivoted to the anvil, it may be pivoted to the block, as will be obvious.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with an anvil and a clamping-lever pivoted thereto and having an elongated slot at its lower end, of a foot-lever adapted to be pivoted to an anvil-block, having a roller journaled therein at one end, said roller working in the slotof the clamping-lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with an anvil having a beveled clamping-plate secured thereto and the an vii-block, of the pivoted clamping-lever having a clamping-plate at its upper end and provided at its lower end with an elongated slot, the foot-lever pivoted to the anvil-block, having one end bent over into a loop, the roller journaled in said loop and working in said slot, and the rack-bar secured to said block, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BLOOMFIELD \VHARTON.
