"WILLIAM J. BOESEN, OF ORANGE, NEW' JERSEY.
LAM P-SHAD E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,153, dated December 29, 1891.
Application file March 30,1891.
T0 all whom it mar/y concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BOESEN, of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in LampShadeS, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in lamp-shades, and has for its object to provide a Shade of Simple and durable construction capable of automatically conforming to the contour of any Shaped frame upon which it may be placed. V
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as Will be hereinafter fullyl Set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of refer- Aenceindicate corresponding partsin both the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a Shade constructed in accordance with my in vention, and Fig. 2 is a Vertical section through the same. i
In carrying out the invention any deSired number of ring-like Sections A is employed, made from united strips of fabric or of a single Strip united at its ends, the said fabric being of any desired width, and thestrips are transversely plaited, crimped, or otherwise manipulated to produce a Series of alternatelyarranged ribs 10 and depressions 1.1,-angular or preferably V-shaped in cross-Section. The ring-like Sections A are graduated in diameter, their edges overlapping, as illustrated at a, and the overlappingportions are united by lacings 12 of cord or equivalent material. The edges of the Sections are preferably ornamented and at the upper edge of the upper section a draw-string 13 is placed.
When the Shade is placed upon a-frame 14 and Secured thereon by means of the drawstring 13, the Sections closely hug the frame and the entire Shade will conform to the contour of the frame' It will be observed that Serial No. 386,992. (No model.)
the construction of the Shade is exceedingly simple and economic, and that one Shade may be made to assume many shapes Without injuring it in the Slightest degree. The Sections are So placed one upon the other that the depressions in one section fit over or into the ribs of the next section, as illustrated. The ring-like Sections, being separate and independent and connected by the strings 12, will pivot thereon, which Will permit the Shade to curve or bend to the desired degree, in order that it may conform to the Shape of the holder.
VI desire it to be distinctly understood that .any approved material maybe employed in the construction of the Shade and that the entire Shade may be ornamented as fancy may dictate.
Having thus described my invention, I clairn as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a lamp-Shade constructed of separate and independent ring-like Sections, lacings uniting the Sections and forming pivotal points therefor, and a gathering-String carried by one of the Sections, Substantially as described.
2. AS an improved article of manufacture, a lamp-Shade constructed of Separate and independent graduated overlapping ring-likesections, lacings uniting the Sections, and a gathering-string carried by the upper Section and forming pivotal points therefor, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. Alamp-Shade constructed of separateand independent graduated overlapping ring-like Sections of fabric or a like material, the Said Sections being transversely creased to produce alternately-arranged ribs and depreSSiOnS, lacings unitingthe Sections and forming pivotal points therefor, and a gathering-String located in the upper'` section, as and for the purpose Set forth.
WILLIAM J. BOESEN.
