TYPE-WRITING MACHIN E.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,025, dated December 29, 1891. Application filed November 28, 1888. Serial No. 292 154. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRA GARDINER T0131), of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of'which the followingis afull, clear, and exact description,whereby anyone skilled in the art can make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a type-writing machine with an index conveniently placed to indicate at a glance the position of a platen-carriage that moves transversely across the machine; and my invention consists in the details of the several parts making up the device as a whole andin their combination, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of part of the base of the frame of a type-writer embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the dial. Fig. 3 is a View in vertical section showing the connection of the rotary wheel and the indexhand.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes the base of the frame of a type-writing machine, the upper parts being removed. The arm I) of the platen is connected by a cord 0 to the Wheel (1, that is rotated in one direction by means of the spring a, connected by lever f to a cord g, that is wound about a cam or pulley that is also fast to the shaft of the wheel d. Fast to the shaft of this Wheel (1 is an arm h, that projects upward and engages an arm 1', that is connect-ed to the shaft on which an index-hand 7c is secured, the latter overlying the dial-plate l on the top or face of the machine and pointing with its outer end to one of the numbers that are arranged about the edge of the circular dial-plate. The numbers on this dial-plate are arranged to indicate the position of the platen-carriage, and as the carriage moves back and forth in the ordinary manner in operating the machine the wheel d is turned and with it the index-hand.

I claim as my invention- In combination with the frame of a typewriting machine, the transversely-moving carriage, the wheel d of the carriage-moving mechanism, the bent arm h,'fast to the shaft of the wheel 61 and engaging the arm '6, fast to the index-hand shaft, the index-hand shaft supported in the upper part of the frame, and the index-hand 7o, overlying a numbered dial plate on the top of the frame of the machine, all substantially as described.
