Be it known that I, TALTON T. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Rectal Speculuxn, of which the following is a speciication.

My invention relates to speculums, and especially those that are designed to be used for explorations of and operations upon the rectum; and it has for its object to provide a speculum Which will gradually and painlessly dilate the canal within Which it isjntroduced, and to provide an instrument which will be available for use when blunt-pointed speculums cannot be used, being further designed to be so constructed as to adapt itself for use upon hemorrhoidal tumors of all sizes, so that the same may be grasped, confined, and held so that the possibility of an injudicious operation thereupon will be avoided; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists of a conical tapering speculum provided vvith a lateral inspection-slot and means for constricting located therein, and arranged and constructed in the novel manner hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of a speculum constructed in accordance with my invention, the slide therein being partly removed. ,Fig 2 is a detail view in perspective of a set of constricting-slides. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the instrument.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates a rectal speculum constructed of any suitable material desirable for the purpose, and is formed of a tapering conicalv shape, terminating at the end to be inserted in almost a point, as at a, and at its opposite end in a flared trumpet end c', by which construction an easy insertion is obtained by means of the gradual dilator afforded bythe tapering shape of the instrument. Laterally extending out from the flared end of the instrument is a linger-grasp b', which is designed to provide means whereby the instrument may be readily handled and easily inserted by the operator. An elongated rectangular inspection-slot C is formed in the side of the 6o speculum and communicates With the chamber therein its entire length, so that the Walls of the canal will be easily exposed, and lis provided at its lower extremity near the tapered end of the instrument with the curved or smoothed recess or notch c, which can be used to hold and retain hemorrhoidal tumors While being operated upon. On opposite sides of said rectangular opening are the opposite grooves c', which accommodate the restricting- 7o slide D, working within the chamber of the speculum and directly over the slotted opening therein. The said slide is provided at its outer end with the outturned ange d, by which the same may be pushed `Within or withdrawn from the speculum, and is further provided at its inner end with the curved notch or recess d', corresponding to that in the lower end of said rectangular slot, and which, as said slide may be slid within the 8o chamber, takes over the neck of the tumors and constricts the same while an operation may be performed thereon. The slide D is further provided with a longitudinal rectangular slot cl2, corresponding to that in the side of the instrument, but of the size to accommodate the nature of the case. As aforesaid, the slides are provided with slots of various sizes, according to the case, and said slots have at both ends thereof the circularly-formed re- 9o cesses or notches d3, which also serve the function of grasping and retaining the hemorrhoidal tumors for the purposes set forth. It can noW be readily seen that after a cursory examination has been made of the rectum through the inspection-slot of the inserted speculum the slide is inserted, or having been already inserted, and'by being either Withdrawn or slid within the chamber of the instrument will readily` grasp and hold the tu- Ico mors While the Same are being,` hypodermically operated on.
