DEIVITT O. GILBERT, OF DANBURY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THEODORE M. TROYVBRIDGE, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
INSTRUMENT FOR REMOVING BLACK-HEADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,816, dated December 22,1891.
Application filed September '7, 1891. Serial No. 404,993. (No model.)
To all whom it nwy concern.-
Be it known that I, DEWITT O. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instruments for Removing Black -Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive implement for removing so-called grub-worms or black- I 5 heads from the skin, the special purpose being to provide a device that shall be within the reach of all, owing to the slight expense at which it can be manufactured, which may be used by any person, thus doing away with the necessity of calling in or visiting a physician, and which, more important still,-will cause little, if any, pain in use.
With these ends in view I have devised a simple and novel instrument of which the following description, in connection with the accom panying drawings, is a specification, numbers being used to denote the several parts.
Figure l is an elevation showing the instrument in position ready for use, the plun- 0 ger being in the retracted position; Fig. 2, a similar View showing the position of the parts at the extreme of the downward movement of the plunger; Fig. 3, a plan view corresponding with Fig. 1; Fig. 4, an elevation of 3 5 the plunger detached, and Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the plunger detached.
1 denotes the body having a longitudinal opening through itin which a plungerZslides freely, said plungerbeing held at its retracted 0 position by a spring 3, bearing against a head 4 at the upper end of the plunger and against the top of the body. The plunger also is provided with an opening 5, which may or may not be extended the entire length thereof and which is made sufficiently large, so that when placed over an ordinary black-head the so-called grub-worm or black-head will lie within the opening. In the normal position of the parts the lower end of the plunger is flush with the lowerend of the body, as indicated in Fig. 1. In use the body is placed over the black-head which lies in opening 5, the body being pressed down firmly to place. The plunger is then pressed down within the body, the object being to produce a special pressure upon the flesh immediately surrounding the black-head and to retain the flesh firmly in position outside of the portion that is pressed upon by the plunger. The plunger may be operated in any suitable or preferred 6o manner. I preferably produce pressure in substantially the manner shown in the drawings.
6 denotes a plate which is secured in any suitable manner to the body. In the present instance I have shown a strap 7 as made integral with the plate and made to clasp the body, the end thereof being riveted securely to the plate. This plate has pivoted to it a lever 8, the outer end of which bears upon the head of the plunger and the rear end of which is engaged by a cam-lever 9. The exact construction of these parts is of course not of the essence of my invention. The
parts are preferably connected to the plate substantially as shown, so that a downward movement of the outer end of the cam-lever will tilt the outer end of lever 8 and force the plunger downward, as shown in Fig. 2. As soon as the plunger has been forced down the camlever is thrown upward again, as shown in Fig. 1, and the spring will return the plunger to its normal position ready for use again. I find in use that this instrument accomplishes the desired end perfectly. 8 5
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. An instrument for removing black-heads, consistingof a body having a longitudinal opening, and a plunger adapted to slide in said opening and having an opening of suitable size to receive the black-head within it, substantially as described.
2. An instrument for removing black-heads, consisting of a body, a plunger sliding within the body and having an opening to receive a black-head, a spring acting to hold the plunger at the raised position, and a lever and a cam-lever, substantially as described, for forc ing the plunger downward within the body 10av against the power of the spring. I In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DE WITT O. GILBERT.
