M. M. GOOCH. GAR GOUPLING.
No. 465,779. Patented Dec. 22, 1891.
lm mung-l' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ MIKE M. GOOCII, OF JEFFERSON, ASSIGNOR OF TIVO-THIRDS TO KELLY M. HOOKER AND .IOIIN MILES, OF FLORENCE STATION, TENNESSEE.
CARwCOUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,779, dated December 22,` 1891.
Application tiled July 1l. 1891. Serial No. 399,119. (No model.)
To a/ZZ zul-1,0m it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MIKE M. GOOGH, a citizen of the United States, and a 'resident of Jelerson, in the county of Rutherford and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is atull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplings, the object being to provide irnproved means or devices for holding the coupling-pin above the draw-head, when the cars are uncoupled, in such manner that the jar occasioned by the cars coming together will actuate the saine and cause the pin to drop and engage with the coupling-link.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of two opposing draw-heads with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view of the pin-holding device.
In the said drawings, the reference-n um eral I designates a draW-barof any ordinary construction, provided with the usual draw-head 2. The draw-heads are provided with the recesses 3 to receive the coupling-link and with aligned holes 4 4 in the top and bottornlwalls for the passage of the coupling-pin 5, which consists of a metallic bolt having a head G. Projecting from the upper sides of the drawheads are two arms or standards 7 upon opposite sides of and in line with `the pin-opening therein. Pivoted in these standards by means of pivot-pin 8 is the pin-holder 8, consisting of a metal or other plate haviuga vertical slot il in its lower end, whichhisects a slot or aperture l0. forming shoulder l0, with which the head of the coupling-pin engages. The upper end of this slot is provided with two outwardly-projecting lugs or extensions I2.
The operation will be readily understood. When the cars are uncoupled, the couplingpin 5 is elevated above the draw-head with its pointor lower end resting in the slot therein and its head within the recess or slot IO of the holder and engaging with the shoulders l0 thereof. As the cars come together the link will enter the recess in the drawhead, and the jar caused thereby will turn the holder upon its pivot, so that the pin will become disengaged and drop down. and engage with the link and the hole in the lower wall of the draw-head.
It will be noted that by means of the lateral extensions of the holder it is balanced on its pivot, so that but a slight jar is necessary to turn it so as to release the pin.
IIaving thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a car-coupler, the combination, with draw-heads having upwardly-projecting arms or standards, of the pin-holder pivoted therein, consisting of the 4plate having a vertical slot and an aperture bisected thereby, and
with the outwardly-projecting extension, sub-- stantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MIKE M. GOOCIl.
