ANTHONY B. MCDOWELL, OF EDNA, TEXAS.
SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,722, dated December 22, 1891.
Application filed June 11, 1891. $erial No. 395,966. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTHONY B. MCDOW- ELL, residing at Edna, in the county of Jackson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment for sewing-machines which can be quickly attached to the fly or hand wheel of the machine and which can be used for the purpose of sharpening any instrumentof small size such as needles, scissors, knives, &c.; and it has for its object to provide an attachment of this character which will be simple and cheap in construction, which can be quickly applied, and which will be effective for its desired purpose.
My invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of the several parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described in the annexed specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of aportion of a sewing-machine with my attachment applied.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the attachment, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof.
In the accompanying drawings,Aindicates the fly-wheel and B, the attachment secured thereto, such attachment consisting of a barrel portion b, formed at its inner end with an annular flange b, to which are detachably secured a series of clamp arms 19 made of springsteel, which arms are made in such lengths as Will suit the fly or hand wheel of any of the ordinary machines. By referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be observed that said arms are formed with inwardly curved ends 17 which slip over the wheel A, as shown.
The barrel bis formed with a socket B, into which the hub of the Wheel A fits, such barrel being reduced, as at B to form a spindle for a grinding-wheel O, of emery or other material suitable for the purpose desired, such wheel being held against a shoulder B and on the pintle by the nut B The advantage of my improvement as a household convenience is that it can be attached to or removed from the machine at pleasure and can be used for sharpening not only very small implements but table-knives and the like.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the fly-wheel A, of the grinding attachment, consisting of the barrel portion 1), having a central socket B, radial spring-arms 17 secured to the barrel and adapted to clamp over the wheel A, and the grinding-wheel 0, carried by and revolved with the said barrel portion b, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ANTHONY B. MCDOWELL.
