SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,715, dated December 22, 1891.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JONATHAN LTTnRs, a citizen of Germany, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a novel pocket-knife having a spring for throwing the knife-blade open when released Afrom engagement with the peculiar holdingplate, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a plan view of the knife closed. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of Figl. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section along ma', Fig. l, and having parts broken away. Fig. 5 is a section along y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section along z, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 3, a blade being open.

In the drawings, the letter A indicates the knife-handle, provided with one or more blades B, pivoted at C, and having a spring D, all these parts being ot well-known construction and operation. In addition to the spring D there is an ope1iing-springE,which tends to throw the blade to its open position, Fig. 7. One such spring E is shown provided for each blade B, or the spring-plate is made with two spring ends or portions E, one for each blade. The blade is held closed by a horizontally-sliding hook-shaped plate F, which can be slid over the point or end of the blade so as to keep the blade shut against the action of opening-spring E. rPhe sliding hook-shaped plate F can be slid directly with the finger, for which purpose it is provided with a finger-button G for moving the plate.

In Fig. l there is shown one sliding hookshaped plate F with a finger-button and the other one without the finger-button. In Figs. 3 and 5 is also shown a spring II, which tends Serial No. 388,545. (No model.)

By this 'means it' Ithe plate be moved to engage the pointed end of the knife-blade the latter is held in its closed position against the tension of the spring E; but if the plate be moved out of engagement with the pointed end ot' the knife-blade the latter is instantly thrown open, as in Fig. 7, by the action of the spring E.

'W hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, with the knife-handle, the knife-blade, and the spring E for throwing the blade to an open position, of the horizontally-sliding hook-shaped plate F, mounted on the knife-handle and having its hooked extremity over-hanging the pointed end of the knife-blade, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the handle, the knife-blade, and the spring E for throwing the blade to an open position, of the horizontally-sliding hook-shaped plate F, provided with the laterally-projecting finger-piece G and having its hooked extremity overhangin the pointed end of the knifeblade, .and the spring H, mounted on the knife-handle for holding the hookfshaped plate in its locking position, substantially as described.
