"UNIT D STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
EUGENE L. HOWVE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
HARNESS-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,270, dated December 15, 1891.
Application filed Tune 15, 1891. Serial No. 396,294. (No model.)'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE L. HOWE, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Saddles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side View, partly in section, of my improved harness-saddle. Fig. 2 is a top plan view oi a portion thereof, and Figs.
3 and 4: are enlarged detail views of the padplate.
In the drawings, 2 2 represent the jockeys, which are hinged to each other at 3 and provided thereat with the cover-plate 4,bearing the water-hook 5. Each jockey consists of a metallic strip of the general shape shown in Fig. 2 and flanged at the edges to produce a upon the upper surface of the metal jockey,
and also by means of the terret-screw 13, which passes through a hole in the jockey and engages the internally-threaded boss 14. The spur 11 projects upwardly from the burrplate 9 and passes through the pad-leathers and skirt 7, holding the same in position, while they are clamped between the jockey and burr-plate by screwing down the terret 13 and nut 12 to their places.
The advantages of my construction lie in its simplicity, cheapness, and the ease of assembling the parts. The burr-plate, having the threaded lug and spur cast integral therewith, is cheaply made, and after the skirt is placed in position the lug 10 and spur 11 can be immediately pushed to place, after which the terret 13 and nut 12 are screwed home, obviating any slipping of the parts necessitated by the slow drawing to place by means of screws.
I claim 1. In a harness-saddle, a burr-plate having integral therewith an externally-threaded lug, a spur, and an internally-threaded boss, substantially as described.
2. In a harness-saddle, the combination of a jockey, a burr-plate having integral therewith an externally-threaded lug, a spur, an internally-threaded boss, and a nut engaging the lug, substantially as and forthe purposes described.
3. In a harness-saddle, the combination of a terret passing through the jockey and pad-' leather and engaging the boss, and a nut engaging the threaded lug and bearing on the surface of the jockey, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of June, A. D. 1891.
EUGENE L. HOWE.
