Description

I. w. HEDGE-LAND. SPRING CLUTCH FOR ORGAN PIPES.
No. 464,937. Patented Dec. 8., 1891.
.UN-ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK IV. I'IEDGELAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE \V. \V. KIMBALIJ COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPRING-CLUTCH FOR ORGAN-PIPES.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,937, dated December 8, 1891.
Application filed June 18, 1891. $erial No. 396,634. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. HEDGE- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Spring-Clutch for Orgnu-Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference i to being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is'a broken-away part elevation and part section of an organ-pipe and upper board; and Fig. 2, a transverse section on line 2, Fig. 1,looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
The object of this invention is to provide a spring clutch or holder for removably retaining organ-pipes in their proper position and prevent the same from being accidentally misplaced in moving or changing the position of the instrument.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an organ-pipe in position, the lower end or foot being seated in the upper board A in the usual manner.
B is a clutch or holder in the form of a spring-plate, one end of which is secured to the upper board by the screw a. The opposite end of the clutch-plate is curved or bent to form the recess 1) in the under side, theterminal end being bent upwardly at an angle, as shown in Fig. 1. A pin d is insertedin the lower or foot end of the pipe or pipes, and is 5 adapted to engage with the recess in the springclut'ch plate and lock the pipe in its fixed position. The gage or. stop screw 9 passes through the plate B, near its longitudinal center, into the upper board. This screw is only 40 partly inserted, as shown, a space being left between the head and plate, so that the loose end of the latter may have a slight up-anddown movement and permit of the pipes yielding to any undue strain or action, instead of 5 being held in a rigid position. The screw 9 will be set or gaged so that the spring-plate will not rise high enough to allow the foot end of the pipes to accidentally get out of the recess or groove in which they are seated. The pipes may be easily removed by turning them, when the locking-pin will pass under the'rounded part 7 of the spring-plate, and may be inserted in the same manner, it not being necessary to change the position of the springplatcafter it is once properly set.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an organ or like musical instrument, the combination, with the pipes thereof, of a spring-clutch having one end rigidly secured to the upper board and the opposite or loose end adapted to engage with the lower or foot end of said pipes and removably retain the same in place agai nst accidental d isplacement, substantially as set forth.
2. In an organ or like musical instrument, the combination, with the pipes, of a lockingpin inserted in and neartheloweror foot ends thereof, and a spring-clutch rigidly fastened. at one end and loose at the other, said loose end being adapted to detachably engage with said pin and hold said pipe in position against accidental displacement, substantially as set forth.
3. In an organ or like musical instrument, the combination, with the pipes, of a pin inserted in the lower part thereof, the springclutch having one end rigidly secured to the upper board and the opposite end loosely engaging with said pin, substantially as set forth.
1-. In an organ or like musical instrument, the combination of the pipes, the pin or pins inserted in the lower part thereof, the springclutch, the upper board, and the gage or stop screw, substantially as described.
