0 HOLYLAND ENVELOPE AND STAMP MOISTENER.
No. 464,502. Patented Dec. 8, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CHARLES HOLYLAND, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
ENVELOPE'AND STAMP MOISTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,502, dated December 8, 1891.
Application filed August 1,1891. Serial No. 401,420- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES I-IOLY AND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp-Moisteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is a device for moistening stamps for letters or the adhesive part of letter-envelopes and such like. This is now generally done by the tongue, and becomes nauseous if continued any considerable length of time.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side and full length View of my stamp-moistener. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the sponge-holder, showing a portion of the main water-cylinder.
A is the main Water-cylinder.
A is a cap on the cylinder A.
a is the stem to operate the plunger 1).
a is a handle to the stem a.
B is the sponge-holder.
b is a perforation to admit the water from the cylinder A to the sponge C. There may be a number of these perforations b. This sponge-holder B is threaded at the upper part, so as to be screwed to the cylinder A. The cap A is screwed to the cylinder A at the upper end thereof. This cap A is perforated,
so as to admit the stem a. The handle a is made in such a way that it can be taken off.
-moist enough for use.
In using mystamp and envelope moistener I put some Water in the cylinder A by either taking the cap A OE and withdrawing the plunger or by taking off the sponge-holder. When water is within the cylinder, it passes through to the sponge O by way of the perforations b and in this way I keep the sponge By means of the plunger b I can at will force water through to the sponge, and by keeping the plunger close down upon the body of water it will be prevented from splashing'about.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A stamp and envelopemoistener consistsaid cylinder, said holder being curved outwardly at its center and having the contracted mouth, and the sponge sprung into said holder, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto set my signature this 21st day of July, A. D. 1891.
CHARLES HOLYLAND. [L. s]
In presence of- HENRY F. WEAVER, WM. POWELL.
