THEODOR HUSTER, OF PATERSON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO CHARLES E. HASSENPFLUG, OF PASSAIC COUNTY, NEIV JERSEY.
METHOD OF FORMING LETTERS IN DOOR-PLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,362, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed January 16, 1891- Serial No. 378,036. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODOR HUSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, Passaic county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Method of Forming Letters in Door-Plates, Signs, and
.other Like Metallic Surfaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of my invention is a cheap and improved method of forming surface-letters in door-plates, signs, and other like metallic surfaces. The object sought 1 attain by a succession of steps taken or acts performed, not confined to a particular mechanical construction, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows a series of letters in reverse position on a wooden plate or frame with a border-plate surrounding the letters, the border-plate being face to face with the Wooden plate in such figure. Fig. 2is a cross-section showing the position of the plastic material, &c. Fig. 3 is a front view of the pattern, and Fig. 4 shows a finished door-plate.
In carrying out my invention I take the letters desired and fasten them by some suitable adhesive material in position on a wooden face-plate 13; Then I take the vacant doorplate 0 and place the same face to face with the plate B,as in Figs. 1 and 2. Then I fill the vacancy in the plate C with some suitable plastic materiahas plaster-of-paris, &o., until the plastic material poured into it is slightly above the level of the inner back metallic surface 0 of the plate O, as shown in Fig. 2. Then I take the plate 0 from its position on the wooden plate B, together with the plastic material or plaster which forms its central portion, and has the impression of the letters in it, and I use the said plate C, together with its central portion, as apattern from which to form the door-plates. A mold is made from this pattern and the door-plate is cast in the mold in the ordinary manner. \Vhen the door-plate is removed from the mold, it is cleaned, polished, and ornamented in any desired manner.
hat I claim is The method of making a lettered plate, which consists in first securing the desired letters in reverse to a board, then surrounding the letters with an open ornamental border-plate, then filling in the central portion of the plate with plastic material adapted to receive the impression of the letters, and finally using the combined border-plate and its central lettered portion as a pattern, substantially as set forth.
