SWIVEL-HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,291, dated December 1, 1891.

Be it known that I, JAMES A. BARTLETT, of North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swivels; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in swivels for hooks used in attaching watches to chains and for other purposes.

The object of this invention is to produce a swivel in which the rivet on which the springoperated arm is pivoted is hidden from view, thus forming a neater and more durable article.

To attain this end I have invented certain novel features of construction and peculiar combinations of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved swivel. Fig: 2 is a similar view of the same, shown partly in section to indicate the construction. Fig. 3 is also a side view of the hook and swivel, shown partly in section to indicate a modified construction of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section on a line at a right angle to Fig. 3.

In the drawings, 4 indicates a piece of metal forming a hook and havinga shank 5, in which a socket 6 is formed. In this socket 6 is placed the coiled spring 7, and .between the side wallspf this socket is secured the arm 8, pivoted between said walls by the rivet 9, and havingthelug 10,adapted topress on the upper end of the coiled spring7. The sleeve 11incloses the shank of the hook 4 and the rivet on which the arm 8 is pivoted. This sleeve may be formed in one piece with the ring12, by which the swivel-hook may be secured to a chain, as is shown in Fig. 2. In this construction the shank of the hook 4 is provided with a circumferentially-extending rib 13, over which the lip 14 of the sleeve 11 is burnished or swaged and on which the sleeve may turn.

In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the sleeve 11 is secured to the shank 5 of the hook 4 by burnishing or swaging the upper edge of the sleeve over the upper end of the shank 5 on each side of thehook 4 and pivoted arm 8, thus in closing all parts of the shank 5. The sleeve in this case is provided with an enlargement in the end thereof to admit the button 15, over which the lip 14 is burnished, this button 15 being secured to or formed in part with the ring 12.

By means of my improved construction I am able to produce a much neater and more salable article, as the rivet carrying the 1 springbperatod arm will be hidden from sight.

The cost of the article maybe reduced and a more durable article made in this manner, and no wear will come on the ends of the rivet, which cannot fall out, even it loose, as it will beheld in place by the sleeve surrounding the shank of the hook.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a hook-swivel, the combination, with a hook having a spring-operated arm pivoted in the shank thereof, of asleeve surrounding said shank and provided with an attachingring, and having a lip bent over a rib on the shank, substantially as described.

2. In a hook-swivel, the combination, with the hook 4, having the shank 5, provided with a socket 6, and the spring 7 contained therein and bearing against the lug 10, of the arm 8, pivoted in said socket, the rib 13, surrounding said shank, the sleeve 11, having the ring 12, and a lip 14, adapted to be bent over the rib 13 to form a swivel, as described.

3. In a watch-chain swivel, the combination, with the shank 5, the hook 4, and the pivoted arm 8, adapted to be secured to the watch, of a socket permanently inclosing the shank and the pivot of the arm 8 and provided with a ring adapted to be connected with the chain, as described.
