W. E. GARTHWAITE. GATE.
No. 464,280. Patented Dem 1, 1891;

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM E. GARTHWAITE, OF BLOOMINGTON, WVISCONSIN.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,280, dated December 1, 1891. Application filed January 2, 1891. Serial No. 3761505. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. GARTH- WAITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bloomington, in the county of Grant, and in the State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. I
My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter'described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of my device,and Figs. 2 and 3 sections respectively taken on lines 2 2 and 3 3 of the preceding figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, Arepresents the center and B the side posts of a supportingframe, the upper ends of these posts being united by a beam 0, on the upper edge of which I prefer to arrange a rail D for engagement with grooved rollers E, journaled in hangers F, that are secured to the posts G of a gate and straddle said beam. From its center the upper edge of the beam 0 rises gradually to points I) on imaginary vertical lines midway between the center post A and side posts B of the supporting-frame to form inclined planes, and similar planes ascend from the ends of said beams to the points above named, this construction being clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. 'The bars H, that connect the posts G to form the gate, are shown as being all on one side of said posts, and to prevent said gate from lateral motion the aforesaid posts are connected on the opposite side by top and bottom stay-picoes I J, the latter stay-piece being preferably made from a metal rod matched on the bar side of said gate by a similar rod K, as shown in Fig. 2. A bolt L passes through the center post A of the supporting-frame, and extended from the head 0 of the bolt, and a nut 01 on the other end of the same, are arms e, that serve as bearings for pulleys M, the construction just described forming a swivel.
and around the pulleys M to connect with the top one of the gate-bars H and the staypiece I, as best illustrated in Fig. 2. The arms N, laterally extended from the supporting-frame, are of such length that the flexible devices P may come within easy reach of the occupant of a vehicle or a person on horseback without dismounting. Assuming that the gate is closed, a'pull on either one of the flexible devices P will cause the rollers E to travel up the inclined planesupon which they have been at rest, whereby said gate is moved in a longitudinal direction, this movement being continued as said rollers pass the points I) and descend on the remaining inclined planes until the aforesaid gate stands full open. The gate is closed in a like manner by a pull on the other flexible device.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A supporting-frame comprising a center post and side posts united by a beam having the upper edge thereof in the form of a track, consisting of inclined planes rising from the center and ends of the beam to points on imaginary vertical lines between the center and side posts of said frame, in combination with a gate provided with hangers carrying rollers mounted on the track, flexible devices secured to the gate, suitable supports for these flexible devices, and stay-pieces secured to said gate in opposition to said center post,substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Bloomington, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. GARTHWAITE.
