J. F'ORMAN. POTATO PLANTING ATTACHMENT.
No. 464,263. Patented Dec. 1,1891.
IIII III I MTNIESEEL l\/ ENTER- UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. FORMAN, OF iVOODST-OOK, ILLINOIS.
POTATO-PLANTING ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,263, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed August 6, 1891.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES I*I.'FORMAN, of Voodstock, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Potato-Planting Attachments for Corn -Planters; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference be-- ing had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in potato planting attachments for corn-planters; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to construct a cheap attachment which may be readily adjusted to a corn-planter, whereby the potatoes may be conveniently dropped through tubes into the furrows opened by the planting-machine.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved attachment'secured to the hopper of a corn-planter. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the corn-hopper, the tray being removed. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of my improved tray.
A represents a hopper of ordinary construction, and which is provided with a furrowopener B and a corn depositing tube 0. Adapted to rest on the hopper is the tray or box D, which is provided with a block E on its under side, which fits the opening in the top of the hopper. Secured to the lower side of this block are the catches F, which project under the edges A of the hopper A. Connected to one edge of the box D is a hook G, which is securedat its lower end to the side of the hopper, and by means of this hook and the catches F the box is held in position. To the rear side of the hopper is secured the tube H, which extends downward behind the furrow-opener and is bound thereto at its lower end by a suitable loop or wire Serial No. 401,900. (No model.)
I. The box D is provided with an opening,
and in this opening is secured a short section of pipe J, which, when the box is in position, fits the top of the tube H, thus making a continuous passage from the box to the furrow. The opening in the box D is provided with a pivoted cover K, which prevents the potatoes from dropping when the machine is not in operation.
This attachment may be placed on machines having a single hopper or on those having double hoppers, in which case two rows may be planted. at the same time.
In operation the potatoes are drawn to the tray supported thereon, a tube-section J, se-
cured in an opening in the tray, a cover for the said opening, a tube H, secured to thehopper which connects with the tube-section J, and a furrow-opener to which the lower end of the tube H is secured, the parts being combined, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a planter, a hopper, a strip A on the upper edge of said hopper, a tray, a block secured to the under side of the tray, projections secured to the block which engage the strip A, hook G, pipe-section J, tube H, and
cover K, the parts being combined substantially as shown and described In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. FORMAN.
