MARY PA'RPE-RT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CAN DLESTICK FOR CHRISTMAS-TREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 464,228, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed April 8, 1891; Serial No. 388,l)88- (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY PARPERT, of. the
city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Candlesticks for Christmas-Trees, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in candlesticks for Christmas-trees and other like purposes; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the candle-support and its attached ring detached from the base-wires.
The object of my invention is to construct a device for holding candles to be used on Christmas-trees, and the same so designed that the candle can be adjusted and held in a vertical position no matter what branch the device is secured to. Of course by holding the candle in a vertical position the oil or grease will not drip and soil the carpet or floor.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a wire which has formed in its median portion an eyelet 2. Branches 3 and 4 of said wire are twisted or intertwined together, forming a twisted portion 5, and then are bent outwardly and form another eyelet 6, and then said branches are again intertwined, formingatwisted portion 7, and'then extend outwardly with terminal portions 8. The twisted portion 5 is bent in its median portion, thereby bringing eyelets 2 and 6 about in parallel position to each other, and the twisted portion 7 is bent, bringing the terminals 8 about in a parallel position relative to eyelet 2 and about in the same plane with the lower half 9 of the twisted portion 5.
16 indicates a strip of metal out of which the candle-socket 11 is formed. The terminal portion of one end of said metal strip is soldered to a disk 12 and the other end of said strip remains unattached. By this construction the strip 10 can be bent so as to vary the size of the socket 11 to receive various sizes of candles; or, in other words, socket 11 is adj ustable.
Disk 12 is approximately plate-shaped, so
as to receive and hold the drippings from the candle.
13 indicates a ring, which is secured to the lower surface of disk 12. Said ring 13, as well as the eyelets 2 and 6, is circular in form. The portion of the wire which forms eyelet 2 is located between the lower surface of disk 12 and the upper exterior surface of ring 13, and the lower exterior surface of ring 13 is adapted to come in contact; or, rather, a portion of the same is adapted to rest on that portion of the wire which forms eyelet 6. When ring 13 is located as just described, it may be operated in connection with eyelets 2 and 6 on the principle of a ball-and-socket joint; or, in other words, the socket for the candle and its attached parts maybe adjusted on the principle of a ball-and-socket joint, and kept in a vertical position, no matter what position the other parts of the device may occupy.
The branch of the tree or whatever object the device may be attached or secured to is interposed and clamped between the terminals 8 and the lower half 9 of the twisted portion 5.
It may be observed that the bearings for ring 13, as well as the means for holding said bearings to the branch of the tree, are made out of a single piece of wire. It may be also further observed that the socket for the candle is adjustable to receive various sizes of candles, and the same may be also moved or adjusted to always keep the candle in avertical position or approximately so.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A candlestick for Christmas-trees, consisting of an adjustable socket 11, a disk 12, secured to the same, a ring 13, secured to said disk, and a wire, such as 1, provided with eyelets 2 and 6, which answer as bearings for said ring, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of an adjustable socket 11, a disk 12, secured to the same, a ring, such as 13, secured to said disk, a wire, such as 1, provided with hearings or eyelets 2 and 6 for said ring, and twisted portions, such as 5 and 7, and terminals 8, said twisted portion 5 and terminals 8 having the function of a clamp Id for securing the device to any desired obj eet, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
, MARY PARPERT. WVitnesses:
EDWARD EVERETT LONGAN, O. F. KELLER.
