UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. SIOOARDI AND JAMES HYDE, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMBS FOR COMBING WOOL FLAX, COTTON, &C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,397. dated February 14, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN B. SIGGARDI 21111 James HYDE, both of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Const-rrction of Combs; and we do hereby declare th it the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to that description of combs made for the purpose of combing out hair, wool, flax, cotton, and similar substances. Combs of this kind are at present made by inserting the metal points or teeth of the comb into wooden or metal blocks, suitable holes being" made in such blocks to receive them, and they therefore require much time and labor in their manufacture.
Our invention consists in the arrangement of a thin metal plate, 1, into which the desired number of holes to receive the steel or metal points or teeth are punched. The teeth or pointsAare then put into theholes through the plate I, of a snfficientlcngth so that when the points of said teeth are all level and equally projecting the ends of the teeth A will project about half an inch or more at the back of the plate 1. Side plates, J, are arranged around the sides of said plate I, which are again covered by a plate, K, so as to form a box, which contains the ends of the metal teeth A. This box is then filled with any suitable cement poured into the same, either at the end or. side, so as to inclose the ends of the metal teeth and hold the same perfectly fast, when the comb will be finished.
Besides the time, labor, and expense saved in the manufacture of a comb in the manner above described, the metal teeth will be held firmer in the cement than if driven into a wooden or metal block, as heretofore done, and with much less liability of coming loose, and at the same time the points of the teeth can be placed with greater facility and accuracy into any desired position, so as to form either a straight or curved surface.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The construction of acomb with metal points or teeth, when said teeth are passed through holes made in the plate I and secured at its back by means of a suitable cement, the whole being constructed in the manner substantially as described and specified.
JOHN B. SIC-OABDI. JAMES HYDE. Witnesses:
HENRY E. RAEDER, S. S. MERRIAM.
