S. D. EDGAR. TORPEDO PLAGER.
No. 463,858. Patented Nov. 24, 1891.
[52 ji @f UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE;
SILAS D. EDGAR, OF WILKES-BARREL PENNSYLVANIA.
TORPEDO-PLACER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,858, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed July 17, 1891. Serial No. 399,810. (No model.)
' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin torpedo-placers; and it is designed more especially as an improvement upon the construction shown in the patent to Rishel and Rishel, No. 366,029, dated July 5, 1887. It has for its object, among others, to provide means for giving the ends of the torpedo-spring an impetus as soon as they are released from their hooks by the downward movement of the base-piece.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference na-rked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a central transverse section of a railroad-rail with my torpedo attached to it as in use.
Like letters of referenceindicate like parts throughout the several views in which they occur. v Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a railroad-rail, and B a torpedo of usual form, provided with the spring 0, which may be affixed to the torpedo in any suitable manner, and is designed to grasp the rail in the manner shown and as set forth in the patent above referred to.
The implement employed for applying the torpedo to the rail is constructed as follows: D is a base-piece,which at its center is formed with a socket a, into which a handle E is designed to be inserted for the manipulation thereof. This base-piece is shown as provided with two forks I), having at the ends hooks 0, into which hooks the ends of the spring 0 may be placed by spreading the ends of the spring, as shown.
F is a presser shaped to rest upon the torpedo and provided with a shank e, working in the socket d of the base-piece, as shown in Fig. 2, being acted upon by a spring G, confined around the said shank within the socket, the shank being provided with shoulders or analogous provision f to receive the action of the spring and to prevent the shank from being entirely pushed out of the socket.
H are springs attached at their upper ends to the inner faces of the legs of the forks, as seen best in Fig. 1, the free ends of the springs being designed to rest within recesses g therefor, as seen best in Fig. 1, and to be forced thereinto as the ends of the springs O of the torpedo are entered in the hooks, as will be readilyunderstood. In operationthesesprings I-i serve to give the ends of the springs C an impetus as soon as they are released from their hooks by the downward movement of the base-piece.
Of course the invention may he applied to a base-piece having a single fork, as well as to one with a double fork; but the double one is preferred, as it enables me to readily apply two torpedoes to the rail if such is desired.
\Vhat I claim as new is- 1. The cornbination, with the placer, ofa supplemental spring thereon, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, wit-h the placerhaving hooks for the springs of the torpedo and re cesses for supplementaL springs, of supplemental springs held to said placerand adapted to be pressed into the recesses by the springs of the torpedo, as set forth.
3. The combination of a torpedo having a spring, a forked holder having hooks and recesses, a spring -presser, and supplemental springs attached to the forks of the holder and adapted to act upon and to be forced into position by the spring of the torpedo, as set :orth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. SILAS D. EDGAR.
