Description

OMAR H. JEVELL, OF4 CHICAGO, ILLNOIS.
FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,757, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed December 27,1890. Serial No. 375 ,999. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OMAR H. JEWELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filtering Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This my invention relates to apparatus for filtering water through woven fabric, felt, or other suitable fibrous material; and it has for its obj ect to provide such an apparatus that with a most simple construction provides a large filtering-surface easily accessible and readily removed and replaced, and so arranged as to be cleaned and washed from time to time by centrifugal force; and With these objects in view my invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represent-s a longitudinal Vertical section through the center of the apparatus; and Fig. 2, an elevation of theinterior of the apparatus, one side plate being removed.
Corresponding letters of reference in the several figures of the drawings designate like parts.
A denotes the circumferential shell of the casing, provided with an opening in top that is closed by a cover a. Against each side of this casing is fitted and bolted a circular plate B and C, each with a central stufiing-box b and c, through which is placed a tubular shaft D to rotate therein. Upon this shaft D are rigidly mounted two disks E, intermediate ofv which said shaft is perforated. Over the periphery of these two disks is drawn and secured by screws or any other means a perforated Sheet-metal rim F, covering the space between the two disks E, thus forming a circular drum. Around this perforated rim is Wound once, twice, or as many times as desirable a band G, of Woven fabric or other suitable fibrous material, which is held in position by two rngs of rubber H, stretched over the edges thereof. Against the rm edges of each disk E are secured by bolts a series of small lugs h for holding the rubber rings H during the time the band G is removed or replaced over the perforated rim F.
shaft D being closed by a plug is supported i in a journal-box K, secured against plate O, by spider-legs 7;, for clearing stufting-box c, and upon the overhanging end of this shaft D are mounted a rigid pulleyL and a loose pulley M for a driving-belt.
The casing A is provided With legs N for supporting and securing it upon its foundation.
O is the Water-feed pipe tapped through the top of plate O and provided With a stop-cool: or valve o.
P is the discharge-pipe for the filtered water tapped through the bottom of box I and provided with a stop-cool: or valve p.
Q is an air-pipe tapped through the top of box I and provided with stop-cool: or valve q, and R is the discharge-pipe tapped through the bottom of plate O and having stop-cool: or valve 7'.
The modus opercmd of this filtering apparatus is as following, to Wit: The valves (1 and 'r being closed and the valves o and p opened, the casing A B O will fill with water around the inner drum, which Water will filter through the fibrous filtering material G until the inner drum is filled to above its center, when the thus-filtered water will enter the tubular shaft D through the perforations thereof and will escape into box I, and thence through pipe P and valve p it Will be conducted to the reservoir for present or future use. After using the filter for awhile the filtering material G will become coated with the impurities from the water filtered and requires cleanin`g. For this purpose the valves 0 and 19 are closed and the valves q and r are opened, when all the water contained in the casing A B O will escape through pipe R and will be replaced by air through pipe Q. Then by applying power, by shifting the drivingbelt upon pulleyL toset the shaft D and the inner drum mounted thereon in fast rotation,
IOO
direetion, thereby loosening` and earrying' with it all impurities adllering thercto, which will flow off with the water as discharged through pipe R.
VheneVer the band of filtering fabric is worn and must be reneWed this ean be accomplished by removng cover a, then, while the inner drum is slowly turned, by first shifting the rubber rings ll to rest upon the lugs h, and then by unwinding' the band G, reinovinf;` it. In the reversed manner a new band G can be replaced in position and then seeured by the rinzs II, all through the top opening, without taking the apparatns apart.
The air-Valve q may be attaehed to the top of casing A B O instead of beinfr placed on box I.
That I elaim is 1. In a filteringapparatus, the combination, with the easing A B O, With pipes O and R, and box Lwith pipe P, of tubular shaft D, perforated in its middle and projeeted through both ends of the casing and into box I, disks E, mounted upon such shaft D, perforated Sheet-metal rim F, covering and conneeting both disks E, and a band of 'fibrous fabric wound over such rim F, all substantially as Set forth.
2. In a filtering' apparatus, the combination, With the easing A B 1, with pipes O and R, and box Lwith pipe P, of tnbular shaft D, perforated in its middle and projeoted through both ends of the casing, with onepend projecting into box I, and having` mounted upon its opposite end a driVing-pulley, disks E, moun ted upon such shaft D, perforated Sheet-metal rim F, eovering and connecting both disks E, and a band of fibrons fabric Wound over such rrn F, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signatn re in presenceI of two witnesses.
OMAR II. J EWEL. Titnessesz W M. lI. LoTz, OT'ro LUEBKERT.
