LAGERSTEDT.
' TROLLING HOOK.
No. 463,519. Patented Nov. 17, 1891.

SAMUEL S. LAGERSTED T, OF CAMPELLO, MASSACHUSETTS.
TROLLlNG-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,519, dated N ovemberlY, 1891.
Application filed June 3, 1891. Serial No. 394,989. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. LAGERSTEDT, a citizen of Sweden, and a resident of Campello, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fish-Hooks or Trolling- Baits, of which the following, taken in con nec= tion with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, efficient, and economical trolling-bait; and it consists in the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the invention, showing the hooks concealed within the shell. Fig. 2 representsasimilar view showing one side of the shell removed. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation showing one side of the shell removed and the hooks expanded. Fig. 4c represents a cross-section on the line X X shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The bait is cnnposed of ahollow metal casing made of two counterpart half-shells A, suitably connected together and containing in the head portion thereof a pair of independent pivot-pins b, to which are respectively pivoted the shanks of the barbed fishhooks B B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Within the shell A A is movable a longitudinal hook-expander rod 0, the forward end of which projects through an end opening in the said shell and has attached to it a swivel D and fish-line E, as shown. The rod 0 is guided within the shell A A by means of a stationary projection A going through a longitudinal slot 0' in the rod 0, as shown in Figs. 2. and 1 To the inner end of the red C is attached or made in one piece with it a longitudinally-movable slide consisting of a cross-bar C, having lateral perforations O 0 through which the shanks of the fishhooks B B pass loosely, as shown. The frictional resistance on the rod 0 is sufficient to normally hold it and the hooks within the shell, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the device is drawn through the water, and in such condition it offers no obstruction to grass, weeds, rocks, stones, &c., that are under the water; but the moment a fish bites and takes hold of the shell the fish-line is strained, causing the rod 0 to be pulled out, by which the hooks B B are forced outward at the tail of the casing or bait, as shown in Fig. 3, and caused to enter the mouth of the fish, by which it is hooked securely.
V A" is a lead or other weight secured within the lower portion of the shell A A for the purpose of preventing the shell AA from turning when being drawn through the water.
If so desired, a movable spoon or fin F may be pivoted loosely to the outer cylindrical end of the rod 0; but this is not essential.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claini 1. A trolling-bait consisting of a pair of counterpart connected half-shells A, open at the tail-end portion and provided with a pair of independent pivot-pins b, fixed between such shells, a pair of fish-hooks B, swinging, respectively, on the independent pivot-pins and crossing each other when projected from the half-shells at the tail-end portion thereof, a longitudinally-movable slide C, having orifices through which the shanks of the fishhooks loosely pass, and a lengthwise-movable rod 0, extending between the pair of independent pivots secured to the center of the slide, and having means to connect with the line so that strain on the latter actuates the slide for projecting the fish-hooks at the tail of the half-shells, substantially as described.
2. A trolling-bait consisting of a pair of counterpart connected half-shells open at the tail-end portion and provided with a guide projection A, and a pairof independentpivot-pins b, fixed between such shells, a pair of fish-hooks B, swinging, respectively, on the independent pivot pins and crossing each other when projected from the half-shells, a longitudinally-movable slide having orifices through which the shanks of the fish-hooks loosely pass, a lengthwise-movable rod extending between the pair of independent pivots, connected with the slide and having a longitudinal slot C, through which the guide name to this specification, in the presence of projection extends, and means for connecttwo subscribing witnesses, on this 16th day of ing the rod with the line, so that strain on May, A. D. 1891.
the latter actuates the slide for projecting SAMUEL S. LAGERSTEDT. 5 the fish-hooks at the tail of the half-shells, \Vitnesses:
substantially as described. ALBAN ANDREN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my ALICE A. PERKINS.
