Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
IGNATIUS C. SCHNEIDER, OF SLEEPY EYE, MINNESOTA.
CHIMNEY-COWL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,202, dated November 17, 1891.
Application liled June l1, 1891 Serial No. 395,859. y(No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, IGNATIUS C. SCHNEIDER, of Sleepy Eye, inthe county of Brown and State of Minnesota, have invented a certain Improved Chimney-Cowl, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chimney caps or cowls adapted to revolve and to create av strong draft in the chimney, and especially to particular constructions thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a cowl having a n umher of points of superiority over those now in-use, among which are durability, noiselessness, and neat, cheap, simple, and symmetrical construction.
My invention consists in a cylindrical cap portion provided with conical ends and with a number of substantially tangential smoke outlets or spouts, and means in combination therewith for supporting the same, so that the same will rotate freely and noiselessly.
Further, the invention consists in various constructions and combinations hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily initierstood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a chimney-cap embodying my invention. Fig. 2 Vis an enlarged sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a section thereof on the line :n x of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing` the supporting device for the cap. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view ot' the spider secured on the upper end of the rod. Figs. 6, 7, 8, and 9 are detail views of the pivot or yoke arm employed in connection with the upright pivotarm.
As shown in lthe drawings, the cap has a cylindrical part 2, having a number of slots or openings 3 in its walls, from which the tangential spouts or ducts lead, as most clearly shown in Figs. l and 3. The forward sides of these spouts, forming obtuse angles with the part 2, are made by bendingout the metal cutaway to form the slots. Theother three sides of the spouts are formed of a separate piece of sheet metal. The top and bottom of the device are formed by the upper cone 5 having edges 6 fitting down over the cylinder 2 and by the lower truncated cone 7 having a similar edge or flange 8. The supporting- `upon the upper end of t-he rod l1.

yoke-pieces and are held therein.
pipe 9 extends up through the hole in the bottom of the cone 7 and has its lower end secured in the chimney-top 10. Within the cap and in connection with the pipe 9 is provided the device forsupporting the cap, which, it willbe seen, is extended over the sleeve and The spider having arms 12 may be secured thereto and riveted to theinside of the cone 5. The sleeve 13 is secured in the pipe 9. The narrow bridge 14C is arranged in the top of this sleeve and provided with the spur 15, extending up into the cone 1G, provided on the lower. end ot' the rod11. In this way the cap is pivoted. The rod 1l is held against a sidewise or a vertical movement by the cross arms or yokes 17 anddlS, secured on the upright rods 19 and 20, respectively, extending up from fastenings on the sleeve 13. A collar or enlargement 2l is arranged on the rod 11 just beneath the yoke 17 to prevent a vertical movement ot' the rod 11, While the yoke 1S is arranged just The yokes may be made of solid castings; but I prefer to construct the same as shown in the last four figures of the drawings. The ends of the yoke-pieces are provided with eyelets 22, adapted to receive the ends of the rods, which may be bolted or riveted therein, and the yoke arms or bars are made in two parts, one hinged on the other, the hinged part 23 being secured thereto by suitable pivot bolts or rivets 24. The two parts of the yoke are provided with semicircular notches adapted to receive a halt-section 25 of the removable bearings, which bearings are usually of cork or soft wood or other elastic material, in which the rod may rotate without making any noise. These bearing-blocks are provided with the grooves 2G, whereby they tit closely into the There the cap is small, the movable part 23 of the yoke is ordinarily longer than indicated in the drawings.
In use the wind strikes upon theV sides of the spouts and rotates the shaft, thereby causing suction in the chimney-flue. The cones upon the top and bottom act as defiectors and give the device a neat and pleasing appearance. The pipe 9 may be of any desired, length or may be dispensed with and the sleeve 13 secured directly in the chimney-top.
IOO
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a device of the class described, of the cylindrical portion and the cone and portions oi' the cap with substair tially tangential spouts arranged in connection therewith, a sleeve 13, a Vertical rod 11, to the upper end of which the cap is secured, a spur 15, projecting into a cone-bearing arranged on the lower end of the rod, upright rods 19 and rods 20, and yoke or cross pieces arranged in connection therewith and elnsecured on said sleeve, cross pieces or yokes arranged between the ends thereof, said yokes being made each in two parts adapted to be locked together, separate bearing-blocks 25, arranged in connection therewith and adapted to engage said rod 11, and a collar 21, provided thereon and adapted to limit the Vertical moveinent of the rod 11, as and for the purpose specified. i
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of June, 1891.
IGNATIUS C. SCHNEIDER. In presence of- A. STRIEMER, WENZL. J. MERTH.
