Be it known that we, LEWIS DETAR and LEWIS l). MUNsHowER, citizens ot the United States, residing at Shelocta, in the county of Indianatate of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Screeningl:[achines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in screening-machines; and it has for its objects among others to provide an improved machine, by which the wheat will be thoroughly cleaned, novel means being provided for operating the various parts. XVe provide an oscillating feed-bar connected with and operated by the shaft which actu ates the riddles. Vrie provide an adjustable connection between the crank-disk on said shaft and the feed-bar. The upper riddle is made removable, so that it may be takenout during certain operations of the machine.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through our improved screening-machine, the section being taken on the line e' e' of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan with portions broken away.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views where they occur.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame supported upon suitable supports, as the legs a, and at one end extended upward, as shown in Fig. l, and at this end is provided the feedhopper B, within which at the rear side is arranged an inclined shelf b, as seen in Fig. l, and C is the feed-bar, journaled in the end walls of the hopper, the said feed-bar being cut away upon one side to substantially the center thereof, as seen in both views, and at one end extended beyond the end wall, as seen in Fig. 2, and provided with a crank-arm c, to the crank-pin c of which is attached the pitman D D', adjustable in length, said adjustment being obtained in any suitable man- Serial No. 395,090. Arranged within the box or casing formed by the frame is an inclined ledge or shelf e, beneath the feed-bar, as seen in Fig. l, and which serves to guide the material fed through the feed-opening into the upper riddle, as will be understood from Fig. l.
F is the riddleframe. It is suspended within the box or case by means of the hangers or straps F', which are attached to the side walls of the box or case, as seen best in Fig. l, and to the bottom of this frame is secured the reticulated medium F2, whclLis of three or more differentdegrees of ineness of mesh, the finest being toward the rear end of the machine. At the forward end, beneath this reticulated medium, is arranged an inwardly-extending plate G, as seen in Fig. l, which serves to guide the material out through the dischargeopening G in the end of the box or case.
The riddle-frame is provided with longitudinal guidesf upon the inner faces of its side walls, and upon these guides is designed to be removably supported the frame H, the bottom of which is covered with reticulated medium Il of different degrees of mesh, finer than that of the lower riddle, the finest being at the rear end of the machine, the hooper end being considered the rear end. This frame Il is designed to be held in position by a removable pin or pins g, which pass vertically through one of the side bars of the riddle-frame and into the side bar of the frame ll. The removal of this pin permits of the ready endwise removal of the frame I-I. The riddle-frame F is yieldingly held to the case or box by the springs I, the tendency of which is to hold the frame toward the front end of the machine, but which yield to permit of its movement in the opposite direction when actuated by the mechanism now to be described. Across the top of the said frame, at

a point beneath the cross-shaft E', is secured a bar I', to the uppelface of which is secured a block J, the upper face'of which is camshaped, as seen in Fig. l, and upon the crossshaft, at a point above the said block, is secured the cam K, provided with two or more cams 7c, which ride over the said block in the revolution of the shaft, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The bottom of the box or case is inclined from opposite sides toward the longitudinal center, wherea longitudinal opening Z is provided, and L are adjustable dividers, the opposite transverse sides of which are inclined in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 2 and in section in Figfl, being substantially diamond-shaped, as seen best from Fig. 2. These dividers are adjustable along the slot or opening Z, as indicated in Fig. 1, being held in their adjusted positions by the spring-actuated plate M, which is designed to be forced against the under side of the bottom of the case by the spring fm., confined between the said plate and a stop u on the stern o, which is secured to the piece O, held between the sides of the divider, as shown in Fig. l. Then it is desired to adjust the divider, all that is necessary to do is to press upward upon the shank against the force of the 'spring and move the separator to the desired location, when the spring will force it iirmly and hold itin position.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings. The
upper riddle is designed for cleaning clover, timothy, and the like, and the under one for cleaning wheat. Vhen cleaning wheat, the top riddle should be removed.
Various modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Vhat we claim as new is- 1. The combination, with the oscillating riddle-frame and the oscillating feed-bar, of the riddle-operating shaft and cam-disk havinga plurality of cams, andthe pitman D D',
adjustable in length, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the case having longitudinal slot in its bottom, of the riddles one of which is removable and the springheld adjustable dividers having. oppositelyinclined transverse sides, substantially as specified.
The combination, with the case having longitudinal slot in its bottom, of the dividers, the stem connected therewith, the plate designed to engage the under side of the case, the stop on the stem, and the spring arranged between said stop and plate, substantially and for the purpose specified.
