Description
H. BERRY.
(No Model.)
BRUSH.
No. 462,790. Patented Nov. 10,1891.
W/T/VESSES' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BERRY, OF SI'IELTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO'TIIE DERBY SILVER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,790, dated November 10, 1891.
Application led July ll, 1891. Serial No. 399,237. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BERRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shelton, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in brushes, and more particularly to the class of toilet-brushes in which the bristle-carrying block is secured within a metal or other back.
The nature and obj ects of the invention will fully appear from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure l is a plan view of the inner face of the metal brush-back, the bristle-carrying block being removed; and Fig. 2 isv a transverse section of same on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. l, the bristle-carrying block being shown in position.
In the drawings, A designates the metal brush-back, having the handle B and the cavity C, the latter to receive the wooden block D, carrying the bristles'E. The cavity C is entirely surrounded by the flange F, which is within the back proper and extends downward into the cavity C from the rolling or rounded edge G, connecting said flange with the exterior rim H, rising from the back A. The rolling edge G encompasses the cavity C, and by reason of said edge the flange F is carried inward beyond the exterior rim II, leaving between said rim and iiange an open space and permitting a definite spring action in the flange. The rolling edge G also imparts a heavy highly-nished appearance to the article and enhances the desirable characteristics of the brush.
The cavity C corresponds in outline with and snugly receives the wooden block D, carrying the bristles E, and within the cavity is secured the concavo-conveX key I of the nature shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 381,206, issued to The Derby Silver Company April 17, 1888, the purpose of said key being to enter the undercut recess J, formed in the brush-block D, and to combine with the adhesive cement K in locking the said block immovably in its metal back. I do not confine the invention, however, to the use of the special form of key shown in said Patent No. 381,206 for locking the block D in place, but claim, broadly, the use of any locking device for securing the said block when combined with the rolling edge and. iiange F above referred to. The flange F presses against the edges of the block D and fitting closely aids materiallyin securing the block; but I deem it expedient to also employ a lockingkey or cement or other means for holding the block D rigidly in position.
It is desirable in this class of brushes that the block carrying the bristles be so firmly held that it will not rattle in its metal back or otherwise become loose, and this result I have effectually accomplished. It is also desirable that when the bristles have become worn the block may be removed and a new one substituted without destroying the metal back, which is usually an expensive part ot' the article, and this object is attained also by the present invention.
In brushes where the metal rim surrounding the bristle-block cavity is flanged over upon said block the latter cannot be removed wit-hout bending the Iiange, and this cannot 'be successfully done without injury to the metal back. In accordance with my present invention the metal rim of the back is not anged over upon the bristle-block, and thc latter may therefore be removed without injury to the metal back. In view of the fact, however, that the wooden block is locked in position in its cavity it will usually be necessary to split said block into sections on removing it. This can be done without injury to the metal back, since no portion of the latter laps over upon the block.
rlhe flange F, encompassing the block D and being surrounded by an open space, is capable of definite spring action under the expansion and contraction of the block and always binds against the vertical edges of said block. The flange F and rolling edge G add strength to the article in addition to the other functions accomplished by them and referred to above.
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
