XVILLIAM E. JEYVELL, OF BELDING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO FRED E. KING; OF SAME PLACE.
WHIP.
SPECIPICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 62,'711, datecl November 10, 1891. Application filed April 2.1891. Sen'al No. 387,345. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. J EwELL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Belding, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful [mprovements in VVhips; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawngs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in whips; and the objectof the invention is the production of a whip which will be Superior to whips in general use in point of cheapness and durability, which will withstand the hard usage to which it is subjected and retain its shape, which will be more flexible and elastic, and which can be made of attractive appearance.
To attain the desired object the invention consists of a whip the main or body portion of which is composed of what is known as horn-bone, constructed substantially as illustrated, described, and specifically defined by the claim.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a whip construeted in accordance with my invention, partly broken away to illustrate how the body portion is formed. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of the body portion, and Fig. 3 represents a sectional view.
Myimproved whi p is com posed of slivers or pieces of horn-bone A, which are arranged to form the body B and are wrapped and inclosed in a cover O; or the pieces of material Vmay be formed into a body and cement-ed together without departing from the spirit of my invention. At present these pieces of horn-bone are considered Worthless; but by my invention they are utilized to produce a whi p which is farsuperior to the whips in common use. It Will be understood that these slivers or pieces of horn-bone are bundled and secured together in such manner as to give the proper or tapering shape to the whip, as is evident. The pieces or slivers of born-bone are of any length, shape, and thickness, and'when I secure them by binding I secure first a few pieces, then add to these, and wind them, thus binding the slivers in layers and making a whip which is of the greatest possible strength and durability. Then the slivers are secured by cement, l fill all the interstices or spaces between the slivers and retain them in a solid body. A whip made of horn-bone has the proper amount of elasticity, but is not likely to be too elastic.
I claim as my inventiolr- As an mproved article of manufactnre, a whip having a case made up of slivers or short pieces of horn-bone and secnred, as applied to each other, by a binding-wrapping extending through and through the said case, substantially as described.
In testimon y whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J AY WILsoN, CHAs. R. FooTE.
