SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,373, dated November 3, 1891.

Be it known that I, EZEKIEL C. CONDIT, of Denver, Arapahoe county, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dry Closets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in dry closets. and Vespecially to the device shown and described in an application for Letters Patent filed by me in the United States Patent Oifice on the 23d day of June, 1890, No. 356,434; and my present invention has for its object, first, to provide means for disposing of the urine and liquid contained in the excrement and for preventing the absorption thereof by the vault-walls; second, to provide for the drying of the excrement preparatory to burning, which I accomplish by making the plate upon which it fails a cover fora flue conveying the products of combustion from a fire-box; third, to dispose of the vapors arising from the drying excrement, which I accomplish by causing such vapors to pass outward into a stack together with a body of heated air; fourth, to prevent any urine from flowing forward under the lower edge of the front board of the seat, which I accomplish by placing a trough upon the rear face of the said front boa: d in such a position as to intercept the urine that may be thrown forward thereon;

and my invention also has for its object to provide various improvements on the device shown in the aforesaid application; and it therefore consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the several parts of which it is composed, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of a closet constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line C D of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the yokes carrying the plates; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of my invention.

The vault 1 is formed by the front and rear walls 2 and 3, the former of which carries upon its top the flooring i of the closet, which may consist of any desired number of seats. Upon the top of the front wall 2 of the vault is also carried the plate 5, forming a continuation thereof, while the top 6 is carried upon the upper edges of the said plate. Upper and lower plates 7 and S extend from the front to the rear walls of the vault, and form between them a fine 9 for the products of combustion of the fire-box 10, situated in the vault near one end thereof, the said fine 9 communicating at the opposite end of the vault with a stack 11 by means of the pipe 12, which passes through the base of the stack 13, with which the vault is connected, the passage 14:, connecting the said stack 13, and the vault being located above the upper plate 7, or, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the pipe 12 may go up within the stack 13. A suitable ash-box 15 is placed below the fire-box 10, while openings 1G 16 in the front and back walls of the vault adinitair to that end thereof occupied by the fire-box, which air by passing over the upper plate 7 is heated, thus creating a draft in the stack 13, which will carry off any odors or gases arising from the excrement upon plate 7, upon which plate it will fall through the openings 17 in the seat (3. An opening 18, adapted to be closed by a door 19, is made in the end wall 20 of the vault, through which any desired tool may be inserted from time to time to rake the excrement off the upper plate 7 into a caldron 21, located at the end of the plate and forming the top of the fire-box. This caldron has a depressed bottom and is mounted upon piv otal pins 22 upon its opposite sides, upon which it may be turned when the excrement contained therein is sufiiciently dried by the heat of the fire, dumpingits contents into the fire-box, where it will be consumed.

In order to cause the urine that might fall through upon thetop plate 7 to drain otf,Igive an inclination to both of the plates 7 and S, and although I have shown the forward edge of such plates as lower than the rear it is evident that this construction may be reversed without any change other than that of the location of the parts to be hereinafter described.

The front edge of the plates 7 and 8, instead of being built directly into the front IOC wall 2, are contained within yokes 23, contained in such wall, the said yokes having at intervals in their length bottom and front ribs 24, which serve to prevent the contact of the front edge andlower surface of the plates with the front and bottom of the yokes, which would obstruct the flow of the urine. Flanges 25 project from the bottom of the yokes and serve to throw the urine off from the front wall 2, which would otherwise become foul. It will thus be seen that any urine falling on the upper plate 7 will flow to the front edge thereof and pass between such edge and the yoke to below the plate, where it will be thrown by the flange 25 outward upon the plate 8, whence it would flow in a similar manner to below the forward edge of such plate to be again thrown outward to fall to the bottom of the vault and be absorbed by the ground or to be received by a suitable trough 26, by which it may be led to a sewer.

In some cases I may desire to make the plates level or to incline them toward both the front and rear, and in such cases I place a yoke 23, such as has already been described, at each edge thereof, as shown in Fig. 5.

In order to protect the joint between the plate 5 and the front wall 2 from the passage of urine which may be thrown forward against the upper portion of the former I may use a flange 27, under which is situated a trough 28, inclined toward the caldron, into which the urine thrown into the trough by the flange will flow through the spout 29 and be there evaporated. It will also be evident that the flanges 25 and 27 protect the joints between the sections of the yoke (I by preference make each section of the same length as the distance between the several seats) against the passage of urine, which "would render the wall 2 foul.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a dry closet, the combination, with the front and rear walls forminga vault, of an inclined plate therein, and a'yoke contained within one of the said walls and surrounding the lower edge of the said plate, substantially as described.

2. In a dry closet, the combination, with front and rear Walls'forming a vault, of a fire-box, inclined plates, the one above the other, located in the said vault and forming a flue for the products of combustion of the fire-box, and yokes having ribs upon their base and front surrounding the lower edges of the said plates and contained within one of the said walls, substantially as described.

3. In a dry closet, the'combination, with front and rear walls forming a vault, of a fire-box, plates one above the other in'the said vault forming a flue for the products of combustion of the said fire-box, a caldron over the said fire-box, a flange on the upper portion of the front wall, and a trough under the said flange, terminating above the said caldron, substantially as described.

4. In a dry closet, the combination, with front and rear walls forming a vault, of a fire-box within the said vault, inclined plates, the one above the other, situated within the said vault and forminga flue for the products of combustion of the said fire-box, a caldron pivotally mounted over the said fire-box at the end of the upper plate, yokes having ribs upon the bottom and front and having flanges upon the rear of their bottoms, the said yokes surrounding the lower edges of the said plates and contained within one of the said walls, and a trough below the flange on the lower yoke, substantially as described.

5. In a dry closet, the combination, with front and rear walls forming a vault, of a fire-box, two plates, one above the other and above the base of the said vault, forming a flue for the products of combustion of the said fire-box, and means contained below the lower of the said plates for catching the urine, as

described.

6. In a dry closet, the combination, with front and rear walls forming .a Vault, of a yoke having ribs upon its bottom and front contained within one of the said walls and an inclined plate contained within the said vault and havingits lower edge contained within the said yoke, as described.

7. In a dry closet, the combination, with front and rear walls forming a vault, of a yoke having ribs upon its bottom and front contained within one of the said walls, an inclined plate contained within the vault and having its lower edge contained within the said yoke, a fire-box communicating with the said vault below the said plate, and a trough below the said yoke, as described.

8. In a dry closet, the combination, with front and rear walls forming a vault, of a yoke contained within one of the said walls, a plate contained within the said vault, having one of its edges contained within the said yoke, and ribs formed on the yoke upon which the plate is adapted to rest, substantially as described.

9. In a dry closet, the combination, with front and rear walls forming a vault, of a source of heat therein, an inclined plate within the said vault, and a pivoted caldron above the said source of heat and below the said plate, substantially as described.
