E. RIVETT. v FILING BEST FOR LATHES.
No. 462,329. Patented Nov. 3, 1891.
WIT 5555 dw ga/i NlTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVARD RIVETT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FlLlNG REST FOR LATHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,329, dated November 3, 1891.
I Application filed February 9, 1890- fierial No- 380,812- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Rrvnrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Filing-Rests for Lathes, of which the following, taken in connection with the acc mpanying drawings, is a speei fication.
This invention relates to improvements in in filing'rests for lathes, and it is carried out as follows, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a plan view of the invention, parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation, partly shown in section; and Fig. 3 represents an end elevation seen from X in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
A in Figs. 2 and 3 represents the usual tool-post of a lathe adapted to be adjustably secured to the bed or slide rest of a lathe as usual. My improved filing-rest maybe secured to such a tool-post or to anyother kind of post or holding device without departing from the essence of my invention.
The improved filing-rcst consists of a plate or bar 13, preferably provided with a downwardly-projecting pin or shank b, adapted to be inserted in a vertical perforation in the tool-post and secured therein by means of a clamping'screw a or any other suitable rctaining device. To the top of the plate or bar B at its middle portion is secured a Hat or leaf spring O, the ends of which are free and may be adjusted more or less above the plate or bar B, as shown in the drawings. The spring 0 is preferably secured to the middle portion of the bar 15 by means of screws 0 0 going through a cross-piece 0, arranged on top of the spring C, said screw being screwed into the bar B, as shown; but this is not essential, as the said spring may be secured in any other suitable manner to the bar B without departing from the spirit of my invention.
To the ends of the spring O are secured bearings D D, in which are journaled the filesupporting rollers (Z (Leach of which is provided in one end with an annular collar (1,
against which one edge of the tile is guided during the use of the tiling-rest.
Through the bar B, at or near its ends, are screwed the adjusting and regulating screws E E, the upper ends of which bear against the under side of the end portions of the spring C, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8, and it will thus be seen that the bearings D D and their rollers (Z (7 may be raised or lowered more or less simply by turning the screws E E according to the size of the object to be filed while being held or rotated by the lathe chuck or spindle.
F in dot-ted lines in Fig. represents the file as resting on top of the rollers (Z d, and f represents the article to be filed while being held stationary or rotated by the lathe chuck or spindle.
The operation of the device is as follows: The plate or bar B is adjusted up or down relative to the tool-postAand secured rigidly to the latter, after which the rollers (Z (l are adjusted up or down by means of the screws E E until the tops of the rollers (Z (Z will be in a line with or slightly below the top or upper face of the object to be filed, which may be held stationary or rotated while the operator moves the file forward and back upon the said rollers (Z (Z, as is common in devices of this kind.
The invention is very simple in construction and can be adjusted with the greatest degree of nicety for the purpose for which it is intended.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim The herein-described tiling-rest, consisting of the plate or bar 1;, a spring C, secured about midway upon it and having rollers j on rnaled at its ends and having regulating-screws for adjusting the position of the said rollers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 3d day of February, A. D. 1891.
EDWARD RIVETT.
