ASH ARRESTER.
No. 462,067. PatentedOot. 27, 1891.

PHILIPP, SOHICKLER, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
ASH-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,067, dated October 27, 1891.
Application filed March 14, 1890.
To all whom, it nzay concern: 7
Be it known that I, PHILIP? SCHIOKLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Removing Ashes from Stoves and Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to facilitate the removal of ashes from a stove and furnace and a building without vitiating the atmosphere with fumes and gases or ashes; and my invention consists in the construction and operation of an apparatus composed of a portable gas'conveyer adapted to be connected with a stove and a portable vessel adapted to be covered by the end of the gas-conveyer, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which--- A represents an elbow-shaped open-ended metal tube. 13 is a funnel-shaped enlargement at one end of the tube, adapted in shape and size to fit over the open top of an ashpail or any vessel suitable for receiving and carrying ashes. An opening in one side of this enlargement B allows ashes to be introduced into the pail underneath the device.
0 is a plate fixed to the small open end of the tube A and adapted to close, partly or entirely, the doorway of a stove or furnace when the door is open, as required, to prevent gas from escaping therefrom.
My device thus constructed and adapted to be combined with an ash-pail and a stove or furnace is preferably made of sheet. metal, and may vary in size to suit pails and fur naces of various shapes and sizes.
In the practical use of my invention I place an open ash-pail or vessel near the stove or furnace from which ashes are to be removed by means of a shovel and cover it with the large open funnelshaped end B of the tube A. I then open the stove or furnace door and move the pail and tube jointly, so as to bring the plate 0 over the open doorway of the Serial No. s4s',9s5. (No model.)
stove or furnace. Communication is thus readily established between the ash-pail and the stove or furnace, so that when hot ashes are removed from the ash-chamber below the stove or furnace grate by means of a shovel in a common way and introduced into the portable ash-receptacle through the opening in the funnelshaped end of the tube the draft of the stove or furnace will draw the fumes, gases, dust, and fine ashes that would otherwise escape into the room back into the top portion of the stove, and when the refuse matter in the bottom of a stove or furnace is thus transferred it can be readily removed from the building with the portable receptacle without fouling the atmosphere or the furnishings in a room.
I claim as my invention 1. A device for establishing communication between an open-topped portable ash-receptacle and a stove or furnace. consisting of an open-ended tube having a funnel-shaped enlargement or hood at one end adapted to cover the ash-receptacle, an opening in said enlargement adapted to admit ashes from a shovel, and a plate at the other end adapted to close the open doorway of a stove or furnaoe, in the manner set forth.
2. An apparatus for removing ashes from stoves or furnaces and buildings, comprising a gas-conveying tube having an enlarged open end extending at right angles from one end and adapted to cover an open-topped vessel and provided with an opening to admit ashes to be shoveled into the receptacle and an enlargement at the other end adapted to establish communication with a stove or furnace through a doorway and to close the doorway, and a portable vessel adapted for carrying ashes and to be covered by the end of the gas-conveyor, in the manner set forth.
