UNITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE.
ALFRED F. I-IURST, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-IIALF TO POW'ELL JACKSON, OF SAME PLACE.
COVERING FOR STEAM-Pl PES.
EPEOIFICATION forming part of Letters'latent No. 462,047, dated October 27, 1891.
Application filed May 8, 1891. Serial No. 392,085. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: preference having the edges 12 turned in- Be it known that I, ALFRED F. IlURs'r, a wardly, so that when the said parts are put citizen of the United States, residing at St. together the edges 12 abut against each other,
Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented as shown in Fig. 3.
a new and useful Covering for Steam-Pipes, 13 are semicircular collars having turned- 55 &c., of which the following is such a full, in edges 14, the periphery of the semicircular clear, and exact description as will enable any turned-in edges bearing against the steamone skilled in the art to which it appertains pipe when the covering is applied thereto to make and use the same, reference being and the ends of the semicircular collars comhad to the accompanying drawings, forming ing against the turned-in edges 12 of the said 60 part of this specification. two-part covering. The collars 13 and the My invention relates more particularly to turned-in edges 14 may be formed from a non heat-conducting coverings for steamsingle piece of sheet metal, which is out along pipes, but may be used for covering other one edge at many places, (see Fig. 6,) the out 15 objects. edges being bent at rightangles to the body 65 The invention consists of a two-part sheetof the collar and then rolled up into semimetal casing or covering which surrounds circular form, all as fully shown in Fig. (5. the steam-pipe and is heldout of contact The body 13 of the collars rests against the therewith by detachable collars which rest interiorperipheryof the sheet-Inetalcovering.
against the steam-pipe, leaving an air-space As the collars are independent of the casing, 70 between the steam-pipe and the said metallic any number of them may be used, depending covering, around which may be placed a nonupon the diameter and thickness of the coverconducting substance, which is, if preferred, ing and the rigidity that the covering is to covered by some textile material, about which have. The collars are preferably used in sets bands maybe placed to holdt-he parts of the of two, the individual ones of each set being 75 covering together. placed opposite each other, so as to form a The invention will be best understood by com plete ring, thus imparting greater rigidity referring to the accompanying drawings, in to the covering than it would have if the inwhich i dividual collars were not used oppositeeach Figure 1 isan elevation of my invention other. 80 cut away at different levels to more clearly About the metal covering may be placed a show the construction. Fig. 2 is a longitndisuitable non-heat-eonducting substance 15, nal central section on the line 2 of Fig. 1; and around this substanceis preferably placed and Figs. 3 and t are transverse sections on some textile fabric 16, such as canvas or the the line 3 4 of Fig. 2, Fig. 3 illustrating the like. Fig. 4 showing the covering when being ap- I have described the covering as it is when plied to a steam-pipe. Fig. 5 is an isometric applied to a steam-pipe; but in practice this projection showing the two-part metallic cascovering is made up in certain lengths ready ing, and Fig. (iis an isometric projection showfor application to steam-pipes or other ob- 9o ing the detachable collars which hold the jects, and when so made up is substantially metallic covering or casing away from the as shown. in Fig. l, where it is illustrated as steam-pipe. being applied to a steam-pipe. The said cov- The same marks of reference indicate the ering isby preference constructed as de- 5 same parts throughout the several views. scribed in semicircular parts, which arejoined 9 5 10 is a steam-pipe or other object, and ll is together along one edge with an end 18 of the a two-part metallic covering therefor, which textile fabric left free. It is applied to a is made substantially as shown in Fig. 5 and steam-pipe by opening the two parts, placmay be of anysnitable length. It consists, ing them around the pipe, then closing them preferably, of two semicircular parts, each by upon the pipe, and gluing the free edge of I00 the textile fabric down upon the opposite semicircular part of the covering, Whereupon the bands 17 may be placed around the whole at suitable distances apart. In order to hold the two part metallic covering to the non-conducting material, I punch holes 19 outward in the said metallic covering and drive it into the non-conducting material at various places. The raised metal of the metallic covering at the punched places takes into the non-conducting material, and thus holds the two together.
In practice the covering is made in lengths of twenty-eight feet with three sets of collars to each length; but any number of collars may be used,-as desired. Where one length of the covering is not enough, two or more lengths are used, and the ends of each length made to abut against the ends of adjoining lengths, making an air-space surrounding the steampipe from end to end.
I am aware that steam-pipe coverings of various descriptions have been devised heretofore, and do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, the steam-pipe covering herein set forth.
WVhat I Wish to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A covering for steam-pipes and the like, consisting of a two-part metallic casing 11, with turned-in edges 12 abutting again st each other, detachable collars 13, with turned-in edges 14 and engaging the periphery and turned-in edges 12 of each part of the metallic casing, and a non-conducting covering surrounding said casing.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this 30th day of April, 1891, in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
