WILLIAM HUNTING, JR., F BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO COMPANY. LTMIZTED,
WATER- i sPEoIFIoATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,030, dated October 27, 1891.
Application filed March 6, 1891. Serial No. 383,954, (No model.)
.To all Lu/wm, t 71mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BUNTIG, Jr., a citizen of the United of Brooklyn, in the cou ot New York, have inv useful Improvements which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to siphon water-closets, and has ltor its main object to provide for Io the Ventilation ofthe outlet thereof.
To this end my invention consists in the features of constru fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
VIn the accom a central vertical section of a water embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation tak and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken at the :zo line 3 of Fig. 1.
In the several vi found designated erence.
a designates the base of the `z5 bowl; c, the flushing-rim, and d the dipor partition of the bowl, forming therewith the intake oI upward shorter leg c ot the siphon, the outgo or downward longer leg of which is designated' by the letter f.' All of these 3o parts are formed integral` or of earthenware. The longer leg of the siphon, starting from the overfiow-point g, extends firstdownward in a substantially-vertical direction, then laterally or horizontally,` as at z, and then vertically again, as at 1I, whereit terminates in a neckj, for connection with the waste or soil pipe f. A chamber Z is formed between the bowl and the longer leg ot' the Siphon, the wall m of the bowl, the 4o wall of side lnot? the siphon-legj", and twov walls o and p forming said chamber. A verticalopening at q is made in the horizontal wall of thesiphon-legf to effect a communication between said chamber and said leg and waste-pipe. A horizontal lateral opening at o' is made in the wall p of the chamber Z to provide an outlet from said chamber. At; said opening is fitted a metallic thimble or pipe-section s, to whichbyV a coupling if is connected the lower end of a Ventilating-pipe u., which may extend to a liuc or to Lheroof of nty. of Kings and State ented certain newand in Water- Closets, of

panying drawings, Figure l isl closet" en at theline 2 of Fig. l,
cfa single piece the premises in which the closet may be lcated. It will be seen that by thus forming or constructing the longerleg of the siphon with reference to the bowl of the closet l am enabled to provide a chamber. between said leg and4 said bowl (utilizing the exterior su rfaces of the walls of said devices in the formation of said chamber) whereby the foul air or gases within the waste-pipe and the 6o longer leg of thesiphon may be led int-o and carried off by a. connected Ventilating.,r pipe or tube without destroying the action -of the siphon, t-he arrows at Figs. 1; and 2 showing that the air or gas passes from the waste-pipe 6; and the longer leg of the vSiphon through the "vertical openlng q" III` the upper horizontal wall ot' the Siphon-leg f, thence through the chamber Z, from which it escapes through the horizontal lateral opening at'fr in thewall 13-70 into. the discharging or Ventilating tube n. The action of the water-closet as such is substantially the same as other si phon water.- closets, there being-added'in this oase, however, a device o for atording au ascending 'jet to the shorter leg of the siphon to assist the' siphoni'c action of the closet; but this device forms no part of my present invention.
What Iclairn-as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'In a siphon water-closet, the bowl b, the siphon ef, made integral therewith, the longer leg f of the Siphon having a horizontal bend 71 a chamber Z, arranged above said bend and between the side ofv the bowl and the upper vertical portion of the leg f of the siphon, entir`ely out of the bore ofthe Siphon, and formed, by the wall m of' the bwl, the wall 'n or' the si phon-legf, and two side walls 0 and p, a Vertical opening q, leading up from the said horizontal bend into said chamber, and a lateral lopening r in the wall 1J of the chamber leading out therefrom and adapted for the attachment of a Ventilating pipe or tube, as set forth.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, this 2d day of March, A. D. 1891.
