The pressure with which the .rollers are pressed against each other is graduated according to the judgment of the operator, and the diameters and construction of the several rollers A and F are such that perfect registering is produced, so that the successive impressions of the pattern-roller A fall upon the same places on the roller F and on the paper or fabric.
I do not restrict myself to the order above named in which the paper or other article is passed between the said rollers, as the embossing-roller F and the smooth rollers C or E can be made to change places, so that the embosssing-roller may act upon the paper before the cutting is completed.
By my improvement the cuttingof the paper or other article is effected by passing it between the cutting-roller and two smooth rollers, by means of which the cuttingismore perfect, the paper or article is not injured, and the cutters or cuttingsurface of the pattern-roller is saved from in j ury by the excessive pressure which would be required in cutting the paper if only one roller (like 0 or E) were employed in presenting the paper to the action of the pattern-roller. If only one smooth roller were employed in the cutting operation, the great pressure required would weaken the paper and spoil the roller and spoil the Gutting-surface of the pattern in a short time, and besides would not do the work perfectly and satisfactorily. It results from my invention that the rollers will last longer fectly and clean by two distinct cutting operations, the object of which is to avoid exerting excessive pressure on the cutting-die roller A, which would distort the paper and produce defective work.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure" 5 5 by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for cutting lace-paper and similar articles, the combination, with a cutting-roller containing the pattern in sharpedged relief, of the plain or smooth rollers C and E, against which the paper is cut successively, substantially as described.
2. A machine for making lace-paper, consisting of a supporting-frame O, the embossing counter-die roller F, the plain-surfaced rollers 0 and E, against which the paper is cut successively, and the embossing-roller F, containing the counterpart of the pattern of the cutting-roller, substantially as described.
