COMBINED REVOLVING TABLE, BOOK-FILE, AND LANK-CASE.
y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,756, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed December 23, 1890. Serial No. 375,550. (No model.)
'vented certain Improvements in a Combined Revolving Table, Book-File, and Blank-Case, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved combination table and case for use especially in lawyers and conveyancers offices, its object being to provide a convenient compact article of -furniture, occupying but a small space, in which can be placed the various books, papers, and blanks which are needed for most frequent use or reference in an office, the top of the case being extensible by means of tablets and folding leaves to afford any necessary surface on which to place books and papers or to do office-work. Each leaf` is fitted with a curtain, so that when dropped or folded down they together serve as a complete cover or curtain for-the shelves or receptacles beneath. The case is mounted upon a suitable pivot turning in a base or other support, which itself is fitted with casters, so that it can be conveniently moved about the room, and the case itself is revoluble upon its pivot.
My invention further consists in an improved form of indexed blank or letter files, arranged, preferably, in drawers in the case.
Further, my invention consists in the construction and combination hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In theV accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is an isometrical projection of my improved case. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, showing an arrangement of pigeon-holes and letterfile, the folding leaf and curtain being removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank or letter-file shown in position in a drawer. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 5, a vertical cross-section; Fig. 6, a detail of one of the pivoted partitions, and Fig. 7 a detail of a modified construction of the le.
In the drawings, Arepresents my improved case, approximately rectangular in form, the
it in bearing contact with the bar 2l.
ferred manner and provided at their outer edge with curtains 5, the width of the leaf and curtain `being substantially equal to the height of the body of the case, so that'as the leaf is folded or turned down they will cover and protect the books G or other contents of the shelves 7 or other receptacles underneath. In the sides of the case are arranged drawersl0, tted with adjustable pivoted partitions 1l, as hereinafter described, suitably indexed and adapted to hold blanks orv other papers requiring alphabetical or other systematic arrangement. The whole case is mounted upon a pivot 12, turning in a block 13 in the circular base 14.. This base is mounted upon wheels or casters 16, which roll along a circular guide or track 17 upon the upper surface of the base. It will thus be seen that the case may be readily moved about upon the floor and also upon its base to give access to any part of it as desired. I do not confine myself to the construction shown for the ends of the case; but ordinarily one end will be supplied With book-shelves, as shown, and the other with pigeon-holes 8 or like spaces for files, drawers 18, andindexed letter-file 9. The preferred construction of the iile 9 and the files in the drawers 10 is that shown best in Figs. 3,4,and 5. The base or tray 19 is provided with side standards or straps 20, to which are rigidly secured the side bars or cleats 2l, preferably provided with circular notches 22 on the lower edge. Underneath each of these fixed bars or cleats I arrange a similar slidingbar or cleat 23, held by guides 24. in the standards 20. This lower bar is preferably notched or iiuted on its upper edge to correspond with the notches in the upper' bar, and is provided with springs 25, bearing upon the base 19, tending to hold The base or tray 19 may be placed in the bottom of the drawer l0 either loosely or removably secured, as by screws 2G. The partitions or leaves 1l are in length substantially equal to the distance between the opposite cleats 2l,
IOO
To admit of the insertion and removal of these partitions at will, one of the side bars 21 at one end of the drawer is preferably shortened to allow a space between it and the end of the drawer sufficient for the gudgeon to be slipped downward and underneath the end of the bar, the opposite gudgeon of the partition being inserted into one of the openings between the opposite side bars. By bearing downward upon the partition the lower bars 23 are depressed against the tension of their springs suiiciently to allow the gudgeons of the partition to pass between the bars from notch to notch to any desired position, when, the pressure being removed, the springs will throw the lower bars upward and hold the partition in the desired position and free to turn ineither l direction, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. It will thus be `seen that any number of partitions may be placed in `a drawer and spaced to suit the contents, and may be given any suitable designating-mark to show t-he contents of the file at a glance.
In some `cases I prefer to usea simpler modi- Iied construction, as shown in detail, Fig. 7., 'in which I dispense entirely with the base or .f tray 19 and the notched bars to hold the partition-gudgeons, grooves or fixed guides being substituted therefor. These guides may be formed by screwing the strips or bars 2S and 29 to the sides `of the drawer, leaving a sufficient space between for the'gudgeons. lith this' construction the partitions are inserted into place and removed therefrom in the same 2 manner as with 'the `other construction, but are free Ato be moved to and fro in their guides, asdesired. Either construction, as preferred, may in like manner be used in the letter-[ile 9, and as `many files as desired may be placed in thecase to suit the purposes for which itA is designed to be used.
I claim 1. The combination, `with the base, of a rectangular case pi voted thereto, casters bear- 3 ing `upon said base and supporting said case, open receptacles in the side walls of said 3 case, extension-leaves for the `top of said case, hinged thereto and turning downward in front of said receptacles, and curtains depending? from `the outer'edge of said leaves, substan-` tially as and Afor the purposes set forth. 2. The combination, `with the base, of the; rectangular table pivotally supported `upon said base, Vleaves hinged to the sides of said table, curtains upon the outer edge of said leaves, and open receptacles arranged beneath said table and rigidly connected thereto, adapted to be closed in by the downturned leaves and their curtains, substantially as and for the `purposes set forth.
Thecombination, with the base, of the `case revolubleupon said base, open receptacles in the endsof said case, leaves hinged at the top of the case and adapted to be folded down over said receptacles, curtains upon the outcredge of said leaves, drawers in the sides drawer-s, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
et. In a device of the class described, the combination, with the drawers thereof, of adjustable blank-files arranged therein, comprising in combination a suitable tray or base arranged upon the bottom of said drawer, horizontal guides or side bars on each side of said tray and adjacent to the sides of the drawer, Aand transverse partitions having gudgeons at their lower edges, inserted and supported between said guides and adjustable lengthwise thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination, with a suitable d rawcr or other receptacle, of horizontal guides in either side, near the bottom thereof, and trans: verse partitions havingend gudgeons at the lower edge thereof, insertedand held in said .guides and adjustable along the same, substantially as described.
G. A blank-file comprising in combination a suitable tray or base, horizontal side bars on each side thereof, registering `notches in the meeting edges of each pair-of said side bars, springs tending to hold said side bars in contact with each other, but yielding to allow them to be separateda predetermined `transverse partitions 1l, having gudgeons 27 held between the notches of the side bars 21 and 23 in adjusted `positions and adapted to `turn in the same as bearings, substantially as described.
S. A blank-file comprising in combination a suitable tray or receptacle, a series of transverse partitions having end gudgeons at or near their lower edges, and bearings in said receptacle for said gudgeons, said partitions being adjustable in said bearings lengthwise `of said receptacle, substantially as and for purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my' hand this 17th day of December, 1890.
