Description

(No Model.)
M. S. FRENCH.
ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP OHIMNEYS.'
Patented Oct. 20, 1891.
A TTOHNE Y8 NITED I STATES PATIENT 'Orrion.
MARY STUART FRENCH, OF MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP-Cl-HMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,749, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed March 7, 1891. SerialNo. 384.103. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY STUART FRENCH, of Monmouth, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Lamp-Chimneys, of
maintaining a curling-iron, or the equivalent thereof, in an upright position within the lamp-chimney over the flame of the lamp and out of engagement with the flame or with the chimney.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device capable of convenient and expeditious application and removal, and into which the iron or other article to be heated may be quickly placed.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is apartial verticalsection through the lamp chimney and a vertical section through the device applied to the chimney, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device detached from the chimney.
The device is preferably constructed of spring metal and consists of a strip of such metalbent upon itself to an essentially pear shape, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the upper sur face A being convened or cylindrical. The side surfaces near the top are bowed outward, as illustrated at B, and below the center the side surfaces are ooncaved, as shown at O. The inner faces of the side members of the device are pressed or otherwise manipulated to impart to the exterior a transverse convex shape, the convexity being very decided at the extremities of said members.
In order that the device may be as light'as possible, the side members are provided with openings D at top and bottom, of an approximately central transverse panel D, andaportion of the material removed to make the upper opening D is bentoutward and downward below the respective panels D forming hooks E. In the upper surface of the device an opening E is produced, through which the body-section of a curling-iron F is introduced, the handle thereof remaining outside of the device and well protected.
In operation the members of the device are pressed together and introduced into the lampchimney at the top and. released, whereupon, the members clamp the inner surface of the chimney. The device is prevented from be-- ing carried too far downward by the hooks E, which engage with the upper edge of the chimney.
The device is light, convenient, simple, and easily adjusted, and is, furthermore, of economic construction. It supports the iron out of reach of the flame and thus keepsitclean, and it maintains the iron in the neck of the chimney where the heat is concentrated, thus heating the iron quickly. The device is, furthermore, so constructed that the handles of the iron are out of reach of injury from the heat, the heat being deflected by the upper surface of the device before reaching the handles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture,
an attachment to lam p-chimneys and adapted to support curling-irons or similar articles, consisting of a strip of spring metal bent upon itself to an essentially pear shape, the side members of the device having a convexed outer surface at their extremities, as and for the purpose specified. 2. An attachment to lamp-chimneys and adapted to support a curling-iron or similar article, consisting of a strip of spring metal bent upon itself to an essentially pear shape, the lower extremities of the side members being convexed upon their outer faces and the said side members being provided with downwardly-extending hooks near their centers, as and for the purpose specified.
3. A device adapted forattachinent to lampchimneys and to support a curling-iron or equivalent object, consisting of a strip of from the said side members near the centers spring metal bentuponitselfto an essentially thereof, as and for the purpose specified.
pear shape, the upper surface of the device T Wu 'x w 1 T L being provided with an opening therein, the MARX b 1 UARL h hEL 5 side membershavingaconvex shape imparted \Vitnesses:
to their outer surfaces at their extremities, ALBERT O. FRENCH,
and hooks projected outward and downward i RENSSELAER W. FRENCH, Jr.
