Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT RICHARD WVEISZ, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORIQASSIGNOR TO BUDDE & YVESTERMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,723, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed May 28, 1891. Serial No. 394,358. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that LALBERT RICHARD WEIsz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mechanical movement specially intended for bottle-wash- Io ing; and the invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the movement sectioned along a: as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is asection along y y, Fig. 2.
On the driving-shaft A is loosely mounted a hand-lever B, which carries a hinged dog or pawl a. The dog engages a ratchet-wheel Z), firmly mounted on the driving-shaft. The shaft is geared with the shaft 0, and this latter shaft is geared with the working shaft D, so that said working shaft makes a certain number of revolutionsas, for example, twenty-to one revolution of the drivingshaft, said gears being arranged as multiplyinggears. Said gears are designated by the letter F. On the work-shaft D is mounted a fiy-wheel c and holder d to receive a brush,
scraper, or other tool c. When the handlever B is moved in one direction, a positive motion is imparted to the shafts A O D. While the hand-lever is moved backward, the movement of the shafts is continued by the momentum of the fly-wheel 0, so that a very rapid and continuous rotary mot-ion can be imparted to the tool 6.
The shafts A O D, on which the gears F are mounted, have their bearing in the frame 0, which is provided with suitable hubs P for that purpose. The backward movement of the actuating-lever B is controlled by a stop Q, which projects from the frame.
It will be observed that by the arrangement of hand-lever B, pawl a, fly-wheel C, and toolholder (1, as shown, great simplicity in the construction of the mechanism is attained and also in its cheapness, the machine being driven with one hand in such a manner that,
although positive motion is given to the pawl a and driving-shaft A for only part of each revolution, yet the tool-holder is maintained in constant revolution, the tool-holder being on the same shaft D with the fiy-wheelC, so that the lever B, driving all the shafts and their gears by the single movement in one direction imparted to it, causes by its combination with the fly-wheel the revolution of all the shafts to be continuous and unin- 6o terrupted. It will be observed that by the construction and arran ement shown I am enabled to dispense with one hand-lever and pawl without interfering with the efficiency of the machine. This characteristic of the 05 machine is of value in using the machine in the business of washing bottles, to which it will be prominently applied.
As the movement can be set at work by merely reciprocating the handleB, the Work can be carried on with more convenience and less fatigue to the operator than if the shaft A were rotated by a crank. As the operator needs but one hand for operating the lever B, the other hand is left free for presenting articles to the tool 6.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A mechanical movement consisting of the rectangular frame 0, formed with the series of hubs P and having the laterally-projecting lever stop-arm Q, the shafts A, O, and D,
j ournaled in the hubs of the frame and geared together, the tool-holder d and balance-wheel 0, both mounted on the single shaft D, the ratchet-wheel b on the shaft A, and the handlever B, journaled on the latter, having the pawl a and limited in its back-stroke by the lateral lever stop-arm on the rectangular frame, all constructed and arranged to oper- 9 ate as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT RICHARD. WEISZ. Witnesses:
