L. WEISHAN'& F. JASTER. COMBINED VEGETABLE SLIGEE AND GRATER No. 461,656. Patented Oct. 20,1891.
Pz'rens 09., mom-drum, msumamn, v. cv
* UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS XVEISIIAN AND FRANK JASTER, OF MILlVAUKEE, VISCONSIN.
COMBINED VEGETABLE SLICER AND GRATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,656, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed March 23, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIS \VEISHAN and FRANK J ASTER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Milwaukee,in the coiinty of Milwaukee, and in the State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Vegetable Slicers and Graters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of vegetable slicers and graters, and more particularly to an improved device of this character in which a rotary cutter or grater is employed and in which the cutter and the grater are made interchangeable.
The various features of the invention will be fully described in the following specification, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating our invention, Figure l is a vertical section of our improved device arranged for slicing vegetables. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the gratingdisk.
In said drawings, A indicates a suitable casing, preferably, circular in form, as shown in Fig. 1, and consisting of a lower part A and an upper part A hinged together, as at a.
B is a suitable standard secured at its upper end, as at b, to the lower part of the easing and provided at its lower end with laterally-projecting lugs 12 and b through the lower one I) of which a' clamping-screw O is threaded, by which the standard is conveniently secured to the edge of the table or other support.
D indicates a cutting-disk, preferably formed from a single piece of sheet steel and provided with radial slots (1 d, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1. The metal at one side of each of said radial slots is bent outwardly and sharpened to form cutting-blades d d. A shaft E is passed through a central opening in the disk D, said shaft extending outwardly through the casing and adapted to receive a Serial No. 386,024. (No model.)
in said disk occupies the opening formed by V the depression of the central portion of the disk.
A projecting hub D is secured to the central portion of the cutting-disk D, and is preferably provided with a squared aperture (1 through which a squared portion 6 of the shaft E is passed. The hub D is conveniently provided with lateral lugs or ears (1 d through which rivets are conveniently passed to secure the disk D and the hub together.
At the points where the shaft E passes through the side walls of the frame or casing said shaft is suitably rounded, as at 6 e and the end to which the crank is applied is preferably squared, so that the crank may be applied without set-screws or other means of retaiiiing it upon the shaft.
A chute G is provided upon the upper part of the casing, said chute communicating with the interior of the casing, as shown in Fig. 2. A plug or follower G is fitted within the chute Gr and is arranged to feed or force the vegetables in the chute against the revolving disk D.
In order to facilitate the removal of the cutter and the substitution of a grater therefor, or vice versa, the opposing edges of the upper and lower parts of the casing are provided with notches, each of said notches forming one-half of the bearing for the shaft E. Any suitable locking deviceas, for instance, a hasp His provided upon the upper or hinged portion of the casing and is arranged to engage a lug or projection h upon the lower or stationary part of the casing.
I is a grating-disk of a size and shape similar to that of the cutting-disk D. Said gratin g-disk is provided with a central aperture 'L' for the reception of the collar 6 on the shaft E, and a projecting hub I is secured by rivets to the rear surface of the grating-disk. A frame 1 provided with spider-armsi, is
arranged to support the disk I and render the same sufficiently rigid to properly grate any vegetables which may be fed against it through the hopper.
The operation of our improved device is as follows: Assuming that it is desired to slice the vegetables, the cutting-disk D is slipped into position upon the shaft E and the shaft dropped into its hearings in the casing, when the cover is closed and the fastening device secured, so as to retain the cover closed upon the lower part of the casing. The vegetables are then placed in the hopper and fed against the cutting-disk by means of the plug or follower, when by the rotation of the handle the disk will be caused to evenly slice the vegetables as they are fed against said disk. The cut slices will fall upon the inside of the casing and will drop out through the opening a at the bottom thereof. The projecting hub upon the disk will bear against the inner surface of the opposite side wall of the casing, and thus hold the knife up to its work, while the collar e upon the shaft will engage the inner surface of the other wall and prevent the shaft from working longitudinally in the opposite direction.
Now in order to adapt the device for use as a grater, it is only necessary to unfasten and throw back the cover A lift out the disk D and shaft E, remove the crank F and disk D from the shaft, when the grating-disk I may he slipped upon the shaft, the shaft again dropped into its bearings, the cover closed and again secured by the fastenings H h, and the crank replaced upon the end of the shaft. In this condition the apparatus is in condition to operate as a vegetable-grater, and the operation of the device in grating the vegetables is effected in precisely the same manner as in the operation of the device to 'slice vegetables.
It will thus be seen that by our im proved construction we are enabled to provide a combined vegetable slicer and grater which is at once cheap, simple in construction, and strong and durable and in which the parts may be easily and quickly changed to adapt the device for either kind of work that it may be desired to perform.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination, with a flat cylindrical casing, of a shaft removablyjournaled in said casing, an annular shoulder on said shaft, arranged to engage with the inner surface of one side of said casing,a disk adapted forengagement with said shaft, said disk being recessed to receive said annular shoulder and provided with a projecting hub adapted to engage with the inner surface of the opposite side of the casing, said disk being further provided with integral cutting or grating edges formed by upsetting portions of said disk, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a flat cylindrical casing comprising upper and lower portions hinged togetherat one side and provided with bearings formed in their abutting edges, of a shaft 'removably journaled in said bearings, said shaft being provided with an annular shoulder adapted to engage with the inner surface of one of said bearings, a slicing. or grating disk removably engaged with said shaft, said disk being recessed upon one side to receive said annular shoulder and provided upon its other side with a projecting hub adapted to engage with the inner surface of the opposite bearing, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a flat cylindrical casing consisting of upper and lower portions or halves hinged together atone side and provided with bearings formed in their abutting edges, of a shaft removably secured in said bearings and provided with an annular shoulder adapted to engage with the inner surface of one of said bearings, a slicing or grating disk removably secured upon said shaft, said disk being recessed upon one side to receive said annular shoulder and provided upon its other side with a projecting hub adapted to engage with the inner surface of the other bearing, a feeding chute or hoppercolnmunieating with the interior of said casing, a follower in said chute for forcing the vegetables against the disk, and a discharge-outlet in the lower side of said casing, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Viscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
