GEORGE IVELLINGTON IIEENE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
'WORKMANS TIME-RECORDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 461,478, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed February 13, 1891. Serial No, 381,380. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 'WELLINeroN IIEENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVorkmens 'limeRegisters, of which the following. is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for selfregistering the time of enterin g and the time of departure of workmen into and from a fac tory or workshop.
The invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations of a mechanism for performing the operations above stated, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new registering de- 'vice. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section showing the lever-operating mechanism. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, with portions omitted and others broken away for showing chart-cylinder. Fig. 4 is a sectional View of one of the registering-punches and lever which actuates it.
A represents a cabinet of suitable form and dimensions for containing the registering mechanism.
B B are metal bars having face-plates, which are securely fitted in the side walls of the cabinet, the face-plates bearing against the outer surfaces of the cabinet-walls. They may be placed in rows and upon opposite sides of the cabinet, as may be most convenient. These bars are bored at suitable intervals for the insertion of pull-rods O G, the outer ends of which are provided with curved handles or knobs c c for the convenience of grasping for pulling. The boxes are somewhat larger than the rods, and there is provided a retractingspring S on each rod within the boxes, boaring against the-front end of the boxes and against a pin 0 fixed in the rods, which pins also slide in slots in the upper sides of the boxes. These pins permit the rods to have longitudinal movement, but prevent turning. The rods are also provided with branch pins or hooks b, which enter holes through the face-plates below the rods. Upon said pins or hooks are hung checks or tags T, removable only when the rods are pulled out, said pins being a little shorter than the movement of the rods to allow for the removal and replacement of the checks, but not before the register mechanism has operated to record such removal or replacement.
E E are brackets fixed in the corners of the cabinet for supporting the central punching mechanism. D is a middle bar supported by said brackets, and is perpendicularly perforated for containing punch-pins F. G G are side wings on the bar D, having slots, in which are pivoted angle-levers (Z d, employed for actuating the said punch-pins. The upper ends of the angle-levers are connected to the pull-rods C O by connectingrods II II. To the other ends of the angle-levers are pivotally attached pawls p, which serve to lift the punch-pins when the levers are pulled, but which are allowed to pass back under the headsfof said pins when thelevers move back again. Upon the punch-pins are placed, be tween their heads and the top of supportingbar D, springs g g, which serve to forcibly throw the pins down when released from the said pawls.
Beneath the punch-pins is located a cylinder or roller K, to which rotary motion is impart-ed by means of a clock L, set in the wall of the cabinet and suitably connected by gear which revolves the cylinder at the same rate of speed that the clock measures off the time.
On the cylinder is placed a chart numbered across the top in accordance with punch-pins and divided off into hour and minute spaces from top to bottom. These charts are removed daily and present an accurate record of the arrival and departure of the workmen.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the operation of this device is as follows: The workman on arrival removes the numbered check to which he is entitled by pulling the rod having that number, thus registering such number in that numbered column on the chart and indicating the exact time of his arrival, and when he departs he replaces his check 0y a repeated movement of the rcgis tering mechanism.
llaving described my invention I claim 1. In a recording mechanism, the combination, with cabinet A, bars B, provided with boxes and holes, pull-rods 0, having hooks b for holding check-tags T and provided with ICO retracting-spring S, constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a recording mechanism, the combination, With pull-rods C, having hooks b and supported in the bars 13, substantially as described, of the recording mechanism, c0nsisting of the perforated bar D, supported by brackets E and provided with punch-pins F, the side slotted wings G, angle-levers (Z, pivotally mounted in said Wing and having pawls p, and the connecting-rods H, connecting the angle-levers cl with the pull-rods 0, constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. I11 combination with the punch-pins F,
the springs g the angle-levers (Z, and their pawls 19, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4.- The combination of check-holding pullrods (J, mounted in the bars 1 fixed in the sides of cabinet A, bracket E, supporting registering mechanism substantially as that described, a chart-holding roller K, and clock L, constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
