- An employees time recorder comprising a casing, means for holding cards, a frame mounted within said casing and free to move relatively to said cards in two general directions crossing the faces thereof, revoluble printing wheels mounted upon said frame and provided with ordinals, electric mechanism for actuating said wheels step by step, an inking device for said wheels, a magnet for intermittently energizing said electric mechanism, and means controllable at will for bodily actuating said frame in such two general directions crossing each other.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY B. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New ,York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Employees Time-Recorders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a machine for making records of a workmans employment wherein is employed a time-controlled imprint-making element and a carrier for an imprint-receiving element, and particularly to means for effecting spacing between the entries, or imprints, made on successive occasions by a workman, and the object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character which is particularly simple in construction and highly efiicient in use.
One embodiment of the invent-ion is hereinafter specifically described in connect-ion with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a time-reco-rder exhibiting the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section, and with the casing removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same on the line 33, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow and showing the parts in their initial positions. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the parts in the positions assumed thereby at the end of an imprint-making operation. Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view of the system associated with the imprint-making wheels. Fig. 6 is an enlarged front elevation of a portion of the imprintanaking element; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 77, Fig. 6.
The invention includes generally an imprint-making element, a support for a record element designed to receive imprints, or entries, spaced apart and individual to a workman, and means individual to a work man for automatically effecting, or determining, the spacing between the entries, or the positions of the entries in the record space.
The embodiment of my invention, selected for the purpose of illustrating the same, discloses a single sheet 73, containing a plurality of record spaces, each individual to a workman. Imprints, or entries, are made in these spaces by an imprint element com prising time- printingwheels 46, 49. imprint element is movable in one direction for alining it with a selected workmans rec- The ord space, is normally maintained in a position of rest, or initial position at corresponding ends of such spaces, and is movable from such position of rest, or initial position, lengthwise of the record spaces. The extent of this movement is determined by displaceable parts 7 5 arranged in sets, or groups, each being individual to one record space, and a single member 23 movable wit-h the imprint element and common to all of the displaceable parts 75 cooperatestherewith.
It will be understood that a set of displaceable parts 75 is associated with each record space and each displaceable part of each set is complemental to an independent portion of its record space; the general arrangement being such that each set of displaceable parts determines the spacing of the imprint element for the associated record space and does not affect the spacing of the imprint element for any other record space and, consequently, the spacing of the entries for each workman is effected entirely independently of the spacing of the entries for any other workman.
The illustrated embodiment of my invention further includes a manual, or handle, common to all the workmen, which is adapted to be shifted in one direction into a plurality of positions, each corresponding to one record space, and this movement, through suitable interposed mechanism, alines the selected record space and the imprint element. The manual or handle is also shiftable in a second direction, which, through interposed mechanism, effects a movement of the imprint element lengthwise of the selected record space.
The illustrated machine is so constructed that the second movement of the handle is of a uniform length, or extent, and sufiicient for eitecting a movement of the imprint element the full length of any record space, but the imprint element is designed to be arrested at variable positions, as determined by the aforesaid displaceable parts 7 5,short of its full range of movement.
The illustrated machine also includes a device cooperating in one movement with all of the displaced parts 7 5 for restoring the same to initial positions, such device comprising a plate 78 movable about an axis 80.
With this general outline of the illustrated 110 structure, the same will now be described more in detail.
The main frame of the machine is designated 1 and may be secured to a suitable support by means of screws or the like passing through openings 8. This frame includes a sub-frame 2 for supporting parts to be hereinafter described.
Certain of the parts of the mechanism are intended to be beyond the control of the workman, and are mounted on the frame 1, 'or sub-frame 2, and are inclosed by a casing 3, pivoted at 4 near one edge, and held to the frame 1 at a point separated from the point t by a rod 12 engaging alining openings in lugsll projecting from the frame 1, and openings in the sides of the casing. The rod is held against accidental displacement by a suitable pin 13 extending through an opening at one end thereof and is pro vided at its other end with a knob 14. An opening is provided in the side of the casing for giving access to the interior thereof and this opening is normally closed by a door 9 provided with a knob 10. Brackets 14 extend outwardly from the upper port-ion of the sub-frame 2, at opposite sides thereof, and support a cylindrical guide rod 15 pro vided with stop collars 16, retained in position on the rod by set screws 17. Slidably mounted upon the guide rod 15, and adapted to oscillate thereon, is a bearing sleeve 18 provided with vertically disposed bearing barrels, or sleeves, 19.
Mounted within the bearing sleeves 19, and free to slide relatively thereto, are rods 20, the upper ends of which are provided. with lock-nuts 21, forming limiting stops for the said rods 20. The rods 20 are rigidly secured to and form parts of a recording frame, the main elements of which are shown at 22, the lower end of said frame being formed by a depending arm 23, provided with a foot 24, as indicated more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4:. Spiral springs 25 encircle the rods 20 and engage the upper ends of the bearing sleeves 19 and the lower ends of bearing sleeves 26, so as to exert more or less tension. The bearing sleeves 26 are rigidly connected with an arm 27, to which is fastened by means of a stem 28 a knob 29, this stem 28 being rigidly secured within a head 30 integral with the arm 27, as indicated more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4:. The springs 25 tend to force the sleeves 26 against the nuts 21 and act thereby for holding the elements 22 in contact with the sleeves 19, such contact determining the extreme upward position of the frame. When the frame occupies its eX- treme upward position the imprint element, to be hereinafter described, and which is mounted in and movable with the frame, is held at its extreme upward position, hereinafter referred to as its normal position or the armature.

The knob 29 and arm 27 are movable in one general direction into a plurality of positions, each individual to a workman, or into alinement with any one of the slots 5, and thus the imprint element, and any desired record space on the receiving element, may be alined. The knob 29 and arm 27 when in any one of the aforesaid positions may be given an additional movement in a direction lengthwise of the alining slot 5 for effecting movement of the imprint element lengthwise of the record space in registration therewith.
A blocking-bar 31 is rigidly secured within the casing and is disposed immediately adjacent to the slots and G. A bell 32 is mounted upon a lug 33, connected with the bearing sleeves 26. The bell is provided with a clapper 34, and with a spring tripping finger The arrangement of the parts is such that when the knob 29 is depressed to a point where the head 30 is adjacent the under side of the blocking-bar 31, as indicated in Fig. 1, the springs 25 are compressed as shown in that figure, the bell meanwhile passing downward so that the spring finger is tripped by the stop 7, thereby causing the clapper 34c to strike the bell. When, however, the pressure of the hand upon the knob 29 is released so that the tension of the springs 25 carries the bearing sleeves 26 and bell. 32 back into the normal position indicated in Fig. 3, the spring finger 35 merely swings downward and slides past the stop 7.
A two-pole magnet is shown at 36 and is provided with an armature 37, this armature having a guide aperture 38 in which loosely works a guide-pin 39. Lock-nuts 4-0 are mounted upon the outer end of this guide-pin and serve as a limiting stop for The armature is mounted upon a post- 41, being pivoted thereupon at the point 42. A spring 43 normally retains the armature 37 in the position indicated in .Fig. 3. A pawl 1 1 is pivoted upon the armature 37 and engages a ratchet-wheel 45, to which a wheel 46 1s rlgidly connected. The
The type- wheels 46 and 49 are mounted in bearings 50 and constitute an imprint element. A ratchet-wheel 51 is secured rigidly to the type-wheel 49 for the purpose of causing the rotation thereof. A pawl 52 is pivoted upon an armature 53, this armature being in turn pivoted at 54, and free to move toward and from a magnet This armature, pawl and ratchet are similar to those already described. A wheel 56, driven by clockwork, is provided with contacts 57, which engage a resilient contactarm 58, thereby forming an electrical contact. Thecontact-arm 58 is connected by means of a wire 59 with the magnet 36, this magnet being connected by means of a wire 60 with a battery 61. A wire 62 is connected to the wire 60, at one side of the battery, as indicated more particularly in Fig. 5, and is also connected with the spring-arm 48. A wire 64 is connected with the wire 60, at the other side of the battery, and with the magnet 55, this magnet being in turn connected by means of a wire 63 with the axle 49 of the wheel 49. The number of contacts 57 upon the wheel 56 corresponds with the number of ordinals upon the type-wheel 46, and on engagement of the spring-arm 58 by a con tact 57 the type-wheel 46 is turned a distance corresponding to the angular interval between a pair of adjacent contacts 57. Each time the wheel 46 makes a complete revolution, the contact formed by the pin 47 and the spring-arm 48 is closed, thereby energizing the magnet 55, as will be readily understood from Fig. 5.
The successive intermittent movements of the type-wheel 49 cause one complete rotation of the same every twenty-four hours, because each rotation of the type-wheel 46 results in the type-wheel 49 being turned one twenty-fourth of a revolution. l/Vith the arrangement described, the type- wheels 46 and 49 together present ordinals at a given point in such manner as to indicate the hours of the day and the five-minute fractions of an hour.
Any suitable inking means may be employed, but I have shown a spool 65 (see particularly Fig. 7) provided with a retracting spring 66, and partially wound with an ink ribbon 67, which is firmly secured at 68 to the bracket 19, this end of the ribbon being thereby rendered immovable. The descent of the frame 22, as indicated in Fig. 4, causes the spool 65 to partially unwind, thereby unwinding the ribbon in the form of a web, having more or less tension, and disposed substantially parallel with the general direction of the frame. When the frame is swung into the position indicated in Fig. 4, the ordinals upon the wheels 46 and 49 are successively pressed against the ribbon 67, and a record thus made on any surface which may be at the opposite side of the ribbon.
The sub-frame 2 is shaped to form a large space 69, shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4. Within this space is loosely mounted a plate 70, against which bear pins 71 passing loosely through the back of the sub-frame, these pins being provided with springs 7 2 for forcing them and the plate forward. The record-receiving element is supported upon the face of the plates and is here shown as a sheet or card having a plurality of record spaces arranged side by side on its face, each designed to be assigned to an individual workman. These cards are placed in position by opening the door 9 and sliding the cards endwise into the space 69 between the plate 7 O and the clips 74, which serve to hold the edges of the cards and also to expose enough of the surface thereof to enable the cards to be printed.
A plurality of displaceable parts 75 in the form of pins are slidably mounted in the sub-frame 2. These part-s are grouped in independent sets, each set being complemental to an individual workman 01' an individual record space on the receiving element, or to one of the aforesaid positions in which the knob 29 and arm 27 are shifted for alining the imprint element with a particular record space, and each part corresponds to an individual imprint-receiving point or position on the imprint-receiving element. The pins are provided with heads 76 on their rear ends which act for limiting the movement thereof in the resetting of the same.
A resetting device, such as a board 78, normally retracted by a spring 79, is pivoted at 80 upon the casing, and may be controlled by means of a finger-piece 81, shown in Fig. 1. By operating this finger-piece the board 78 may be thrown against the heads 76 of the pins, thereby leveling them all up, and restoring them to their normal positions indicated in Fig. 3. This movement may be effected, say every night, or at the close of business hours.
The general operation of my improved time-recorder is as follows: Each of the numbers shown in Fig. 1 represents a particular employee. One of the employees, say number 13, comes in and records his time of arrival. To do this he grasps the knob 29,
moves the same to the slot 13, representing h1s lndlvidual space or position, and moves the knob downward into its lowermost position, as indicated in Fig. 4. In doing this he compresses the springs 25. This leaves the entire recording-frame free to drop downward by gravity. The frame, therefore, moves downward until the foot 24 thereof engages the uppermost pin 75, as indicated in Fig. 4:. The employee next forces the knob directly forward or toward the plate 1, thus causing the frame to rock upon the shaft 15 and force the typewheels into engagement with the ribbon 67, and thereby impress the card 73 and imprint thereon the ordinals representing the time. The uppermost pin 75 remains in the position indicated in Fig. 4. The employee then releases the knob, which rises into the position indicated in Fig. 3. Each time the knob 29 is released the imprint element is returned to its position of rest or initial position through the action of the springs 25 and associated parts. Any other employee may record his time in the manner just described, but, of course, he uses the slot having his own number and not the slot 18. When employee number 13 again records his time he moves the knob 29, as above described, and always to the same point. The recordingframe drops downward, but not to the same extent, that is to say, the frame moves one step farther and the foot 24 engages the next pin 75. Then the knob 29 is pushed in again, the foot 24 causes the second pin to be forced backward. Thus successive and uniform movements of the knob 29 and arm 27 by the same workman in the act of recording effects variable movement of the imprint element from its position of rest, the extent thereof being determined by the part 75. The gradual lowering of the recording-frame resulting from successive operations of the machine by an employee causes time-records to be printed in vertical rows upon the cards; that is to say, employee number 13 first prints his time of arrival upon the top of the card, the next day or the next period of his registration he prints the ordinals representing the time of his arrival in the space next to the top upon the card, the third time he uses the space third from the top, and so on. Each employees time is, therefore, indicated in a vertical row. If one, or more employees fail to register, this does not disturb the time-records of those who do register. It will be noted that the knob 29 can not be pressed inward until the head 30 is free to pass below the blockingbar 31. Because of this the frame 23 will always drop a sufficient distance to engage the proper pin 75. In other words, the vertical distance traversed by the knob is sufficient to allow the full movement of the recording-frame, so that said frame may engage the lowermost pin of a row, and the only thing that prevents the frame from going to its lowermost position each time is the fact that its path is obstructed by one or more pins. A record-receiving element, such as 7 3, having thereon a plurality of side-byside record-receiving spaces, each individual to a workman, is preferably used in connection with my machine. As is apparent from the foregoing description, the spacing of the entries of each workman is effected independently of the spacing of the entries for any other workman, and the entries of each workman are separated from one another by substantially equidistant spaces. It will be seen that this card contains record spaces capable of presenting in tabulated form the total time of all the employees considered individually and collectively.
hat I claim is:
1. In a workmans time recorder, the combination with a time-printing mechanism comprising an impression making element, and an impression receiving element of manually operated means for bringing one element toward the other to make an impression on the receiving element, and mechanism brought into action by said means whereby one element is shifted after the first registration and succeeding impressions representing the arrival and departure of the same workman are recorded in different places on the receiving element.
2. In a workmans time recorder, the combination with a time marking mechanism operable to record the times of arrival and departure of the same workman at different printing points, of a manual and connections for shifting the marking mechanism after the first registration by the same workman and for moving the marking mechanism to its printing position by the same operation of the manual by the same workman.
3. In a workmans time recorder, a time printing wheel and a shifting mechanism therefor, in combination with a workmans manual connected to actuate both said wheel and said mechanism in the same operation.
4. In a workmans time recorder, a time printing device and operating means therefor, in combination with mechanism brought into action by said means at each successive printing operation by the same workman after the first registration to shift the print- ,ing device and thereby cause successive 1mpressions by the same workman to be made at different points.
5. In a workmans time recorder, the combination of a workmans manual and a time printing wheel brought into printing action and also shifted by said manual by each successive printing operation by the same work man.
6. In a workmans time recorder, a printing mechanism, and operating means therefor, in combination with means brought into action by said operating means at each suc cessive printing operation by the same workman after the first registration for shifting the printing mechanism different distances.
7. In a workmans time recorder, a time marking device and operating means there for, in combination with means brought into action by said operating means just before each successive printing operation to shift the marking device to a different printing position.
8. In a workmans time recorder, the combination with time printing elements, of separate means brought into action by the first-named means at each successive operation after the first registration by the same workman to shift one of the elements whereby successive impressions for the same work man are made side by side upon the record sheet.
9. In a workmans time recorder, a frame, a platen supported in printing position by the frame, a time-stamp also supported by the frame and operable toward and from and transversely of the platen, and an operating manual operatively connected to effect such movements in a single operation.
10. In a time recorder, the combination with a printing element and its operating means includinga manual, of means brought into action by said manual to shift said element to a different position at each printing operation by the same workman after the first registration.
11. In a time recorder, the combination with a time printing element and its operating means, including a manual, of means brought into action by said manual to shift said element to a different position at each printing operation by the same workman after the first registration, and further means for returning the printing element to its starting position after each printing operation.
12. In a time recorder, an impression making element and an impression receiving element, a manual connected to move one element to make an impression on the receiving element, means brought into action by the manual to shift one of the elements at each printing operation by the same workman after the first registration and means to stop the shifted elementin different positions after the first printing operation.
13. In a time recorder, a time printing device and its operating mechanism, means brought into action by the operating mechanism to shift said device, and additional means also brought into action by said opcrating mechanism to limit the shifting movement of the printing device to different positions at each printing operation by the same workman after the first registration.

In a time recorder, a printing device and its operating mechanism, connections between said mechanism and printing device for shifting the latter, and movable means also brought into action by said mechanism for engaging one of said connections and limiting the shifting movement of the printing device to different positionsat each printing operation by the same workman after the first registration.
15. In a workmans time recorder a printing element, and an impression receiving element, in combination with manually operated means for shifting one of the elements different distances at each successive printing operation by the same workman after the first registration.
16. In a workmans time recorder, a time printing device, a manual and connections for shifting the printing device, in combination with a plunger actuated by the shift 111g mechanism and movable members actuated by the plunger one member space at a time and limiting the shifting movement of the printing device.
17. In a workmans time recorder, an impression receiving element and an impression making element, a manual and a connect-ion for. bringing said elements together for making an impression, and means brought into action by the manual after the first impression is made by the same workman for shifting one of said elements and making a second impression in a different place upon the receiving element at the end of the shift, and means for automatically returning the shifting element to its starting positions after the last impression has been made.
18. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and a recording frame operatively connected and one of which is movable relatively to the other in a plurality of different paths across the face of the other and one of which is movable toward the other to form an impression, and clock-operated time-recording means cooperative with said carrier and frame and embodying typewheels.
19. An employees time recorder, embodying a blanlccarrier and a recording frame operatively connected and one of which is movable across the face of the other in two different paths perpendicular to each other and one of which is movable toward the other to form an impression, and clock-operated time-recording means cooperative with said carrier and frame and embodying typewheels.
20. An employees time recorder, embody ing a blank-carrier, a two-part recording frame operatively connected therewith and the two parts of which are movable in unison in one direct-ion across the face of said blankcarrier and one part of which is movable relatively to the other in another direction across the face of said blank-carrier, and clocleoperated time-recording means cooperative with said carrier and frame and embodying type-wheels.
26. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier, a two-part recording frame operatively connected therewith and the two parts of which are movable in unison in one direction across the face of said blankcarrier and one part of which is movable relatively to the other in another direction across the face of said blank-carrier and one part of which is also movable toward the blank-carrier to form an impression, and
clock-operated time-recording means cooperative with said carrier and frame and embodying type-wheels.
27. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier, a two-part recording frame operatively connected therewith and the two parts of which are movable in unison in one direction across the face of said blankcarrier and are also movable in unison toward the blank-carrier to form an impression and one part of which is movable relatively to the other in another direction across the face of said blank-carrier, and clock-operated time-recording means cooperative with said carrier and frame and embodying type-wheels.
28. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and a recording. frame operatively connected and one of which is movable horizontally across the face of the other and is also gravitative across the face of the other, and clock-operated time-recording means cooperative with said carrier and frame and embodying type-wheels.
29. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier, a two-partrecording frame operatively connected therewith and one part of which is oscillatory toward and from the blank-carrier and is also movable lengthwise of its aXis of oscillation across the face of said blank-carrier and the other part of which is oscillatory with the first to form an impression and is also movable relatively to the first in another direction across the face of said blank-carrier, and clock operated time-recording means cooperative with said carrier and frame and embodying type-wheels.
30. In an employees time recorder, the combination of a receptacle for holding cards, a frame operatively connected therewith and movable relatively to said receptacle in a plurality of general directions crossing the faces of said cards, and timecont-rolled printing mechanism mounted upon said frame and embodying typewheels and free to print intelligible characters upon said cards and in rows crossing each other.
31. The combination, in an organized time recorder structure such as described, of a casing, a blank carrier and a recording frame operatively connected to each other within said casing, one of said elements within the casing being movable relatively to the other in a plurality of different paths across the face of the other, and also movable toward the other to make an impression, and time controlled recording means carried by the movable element.
32. In an employees time recorder, the combination of a casing, a relatively fixed blank carrier within the casing, a recording frame within the casing movable relatively to the blank carrier in a plurality of different paths across the face of the latter and likewise movable toward said carrier, and a clock-operated time recording means carried by said frame and embodying type wheels to contact with the blank when the lastnamed movement is effected.
33. An employees time recorder, comprising a casing, means for holding cards, a frame mounted within said casing and free to move relatively to said cards in two general directions crossing the faces thereof, revoluble printing wheels mounted upon said frame and provided with ordinals, clockoperated means for automatically actuating said wheels step by step, an inking device for said wheels, and mechanism controllable at will for bodily actuating said frame in two independent directions crossing the faces of said cards.
34. An employees time recorder, embodying a movable record-locating element for determining the position in which a record is to be made on a record medium by an indi vidual employee, and means controlled by separate recording operations of the timerecorder by an employee for positively stopping said movable element in different record-locating positions corresponding to different operations of the time-recorder by said employee.
35. An employees time recorder, embodying a movable recordlocating element for determining the position in which a record is to be made on a record medium by an individual employee, and means controlled by successive operations of the time-recorder by an employee for positively stopping said movable element in successive record-locating positions corresponding to successive operations of the time-recorder by said employee.
36. An employees time-recorder, embody ing a movable record-locating element for determining the position in which a record is to be made on a record medium by an individual employee, stops for positively stopping said movable element in different recording positions corresponding to different operations of the time-recorder by said employee, and means controlled by separate operations of said time-recorder for rendering said stops separately effective.
37. An employees time recorder, embodying a movable record-locating element for determining the position in which a record is to be made on a record medium by an individual employee, stops for positively stopping said movable element in successive recording positions corresponding to successive operations of the time-recorder by said employee, and means controlled by successive operations of said time-recorder for rendering said stops successively effective.
38. An employees time recorder, embodying record-locating means movable in different paths for determining the positions in which records are to be made on a record medium by different employees, and means for positively stopping said record-locating means in different record-locating positions in different paths corresponding to different operations of the time-recorder by different employees.

An employees time recorder, comprising a card rack, a frame mounted adjacent to the same and free to swing relatively thereto, means controllable at will for bodily translating said frame relatively to the general direction of said card rack, type members connected with said frame, timecontrolled mechanism for changing the positions of said type members, a plurality of stops disposed in different relative positions for limiting the motion of translation of said frame relatively to said card rack, and means for bringing said stops into play one at a time so as to cause said printing mechanism to successively engage different portions of said card to be printed.
46. An employees time recorder, com prising a card rack, a frame mounted adjacent to the same and free to swing relatively thereto, said frame being provided with a foot, means controlled at will for causing said frame to approach and recede from said card rack and also for bodily translating said frame relatively to the gen eral position of said card rack, type members connected with said frame, time-controlled mechanism for changing the positions of said type members, means for inking said type members, a rigid web mounted adjacent to said card rack and provided with movable pins disposed in different positions relatively to said card rack and normally obstructing the path of said foot, the arrangement being such that said pins may be successively displaced by successive movements of said foot as said frame is moved toward and from said card rack.
47. An employees time recorder, comprising a card rack, a frame mounted adjacent to the same and free to swing relatively thereto, said frame being provided with a foot, means controllable at will for causing said frame to approach and recede from said card rack and also for bodily translating said frame relatively to the general position of said card rack, type members connected with said frame, time-controlled mechanism for changing the positions of said type members, means for inking said type members, mechanism for automatically stopping said frame in different successive positions relatively to said card rack, and a manually operated device for restoring said stop mechanism to a predetermined normal position.
48. An employees time recorder, comprising a card rack, a frame mounted adjacent to the same and free to swing relatively thereto, said frame being provided with a foot, means controllable at will for causing said frame to approach and recede from said card rack and also for bodily translating said frame relatively to the general position of said card rack, type members connected with said frame, timecontrolled mechanism for changing the positions of said type members, means for inking said type members, and stop mechanism for automatically stopping said frame in different successive positions relatively to said card rack for the purpose of printing successive ordinals upon different portions of a card.
49. An employees time recorder, comprising a card rack, a frame mounted adjacent to the same and free to swing relatively thereto, said frame being provided with a foot, means controllable at will for causing said frame to approach and recede from said card'rack and also for bodily translating said frame relatively to the general position of said card. rack, type mem bers connected vith said frame, time-controlled mechanism for changing the relative positions of said type members, means for inking said type members, a rigid web mounted adjacent to said card rack and provided with movable pins disposed in different positions relatively to said card rack, said pins normally obstructing the path of said foot, the arrangement being such that said pins may be successively displaced by successive movements of said foo-t said frame is moved toward and from said card rack, and means for simultaneously restoring all of said pins to a predetermined normal condition.
50. An employees time recorder, com prising a card rack, a frame mounted adjacent to the same and free to swing relatively thereto, said frame being provided with a foot, means controllable at will for causing said frame to approach and recede from said card rack, and also for bodily translating said frame relatively to the gen-- eral position of said card rack, type members connected with said frame, time-controlled mechanism for changing the relative positions of said type members, means for inking said type members, arigid web mounted adjacent to said card rack and provided with movable pins disposed in different positions relatively to said card rack said pins normally obstructing the path of said foot, the arrangement being such that said pins may be successively displaced. by successive movements of said foot as said frame is moved toward and from said card rack, a pivotally-mounted board for restoring said pins to a predetermined normal condition, and a manually-operated button for manipulating said board.
51. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and recording means one of which has different parallel paths of movement across the face of the other and is movable different distances to such paths, and means controlled by the recording operations for stopping said movable element in different positions in each of said paths.
52. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and recording means one of which is movable different distances in parallel paths across the face of the other, and means controlled by the recording operations for stopping said movable element in successive positions in each of said paths which positions correspond to successive operations of said time-recorder.
58. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank carrier and recording means one of which is movable different distances in parallel paths across the face of the other, and a plurality of series of stops, one series for each of said paths, each series consisting of a plurality of successively-effective stops for locating said movable element in successive positions in the path corresponding to such series, said positions corresponding to successive operations of said timerecorder.
54. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and recording means one of which is movable different distances in parallel paths across the face of the other, a plurality of series of stops one series for each of said paths, each series consisting of a plurality of stops adapted to locate said movable element in successive positions in the path corresponding to such series, said positions corresponding to successive operations of said timerecorder, and means for shifting the stops of each series out of action successively.
55. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and recording means one of which is movable different distances in parallel paths across the face of the other, a plurality of series of stops one series for each of said paths, each series consisting of a plurality of stops adapted to locate said movable element in successive positions in the path corresponding to such series, said positions corresponding to successive operations of said timerecorder, and means for shifting the stops of each series out of action successively one stop on each operation of said time-recorder.
56. An employees time recorder, comprising a casing, means for holding cards, a frame mounted within said casing and movable in two general directions crossing the faces of said cards, printing mechanism mounted within said casing and free to place ordinals upon said cards, means controllable at will for actuating said frame in two independent directions crossing the faces of said cards, and a plurality of movable stops arranged in a series and free to successively limit the movements of said frame in one of said independent directions.
57. In an employees time recorder, the combination of a receptacle for holding cards, a frame movable relatively to said receptacle in a plurality of general directions crossing the faces thereof, printing mechanism mounted upon said frame and free to print intelligible characters upon said cards and in rows crossing each other, and movable stops for successively limiting the movements of said frame in one of said general directions.
58. An employees time recorder, comprising a casing, means for holding cards, a frame mounted within said casing and free to move relatively to said cards in two general directions crossing the faces of said cards, printing mechanism mounted upon said frame for placing time ordinals upon said cards, and a plurality of movable stops arranged 111 a series and free to successlvely limit the movements of said frame in one of.
said general directions, the arrangement being such that said ordinals may be printed in a plurality of rows each row representing the time of an individual.
59. An employees time recorder, comprising a card receptacle, a frame mounted adjacent thereto and free to move relatively to said card receptacle in two directions cross ing each other, printing mechanism mounted upon said frame, a time-controlled device connected with said printing mechanism, movable pins for successively limit-ing movements of different degree in said frame in one direction thereof, and means for successively removing said pins for the purpose of allowing said printing mechanism to print upon different port-ions of a card successively.
60. An employees time recorder, embodying a blankcarrier and recording means one of which is movable across the face of the other different feed distances representing different periods of a day and one of which is movable to effect an impression, said recording means including type-wheels, means for effecting said feed movements and impression movement, and a rectilinear blocking bar for preventing an impression movement until the completion of said first men tioned feed movement.
61. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and recording means one of which is movable different feed distances across the face of the other and one of which is movable to effect an impression, means for stopping in different positions the element having the feed movements, controlling means having feed-controlling and impression-controlling movements governing said feed-movements and impression movement, and a rectilinear blocking bar for preventing an impression movement until completion of the feed-controlling movement of said controlling means and also the feed movement.
62. An employees time recorder embodying a blank-carrier, recording means movable difierent distances across the face of said blank-carrier, controlling means governing said feed-movements and having a feed-controlling movement corresponding to the maximum feed movement of said recording means, and a rectilinear blocking bar for preventing impression until the completion of said feed-controlling movement and also the feed movement.
63. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and recording means one of which is movable across the face of the other in two directions crossing each other, means for effecting both of said movements, and blocking means operative in all positions of said movable member in one of said crossing directions for preventing impression until a predetermined point in the movement of said member in the other of said crossing directions.
64. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and recording meansone of which is movable across the face of the other different feed distances in each of two directions across each other, means for stopping said movable member in different po sitions in one of said directions, controlling means having feed-controlling and impression-controlling movements governing said last-mentioned feed-movement and also governing the impression movement, and blocking means for preventing the impression movement until the completion of the feedcontrolling movement of said controlling means.
65. An employees time recorder, embodying a blank-carrier and recording means one of which is movable across the face of the other difierent feed-distances in each of two directions across each other, means for stopping said movable member in different positions in one of said directions, controlling means having feed-controlling and impression-controlling movements governing said last-mentioned feed-movement and also governing the impression movement, and a blocking-bar cooperative with said controlling means in all positions of the latter for preventing the impression movement until the completion of said feed-controlling movement of the controlling means.
66. An employees time recorder, embodying impression-producing means including type-wheels, a controlling device having two movements transverse to each other one of which governs impression, and relatively fixed blocking means over which said controlling device must pass transversely prior to an impression movement.
67 An employees time recorder, embodying impression-producing means including type-wheels, a controlling device having two movements transverse to each other one of which governs impression, and a blocking bar over which said controlling device must be manually passed in a transverse direction prior to the impression movement.
68. An employees time recorder, embodying impression-producing means, a controlling device having three movements two of which are in paths transverse to each other and the third of which is in a path transverse to the other two and governs impression, and blocking means cooperative with said controlling device in all of the positions of said controlling device in one of said first two paths for preventing the impressioncontrolling movement of said controlling device until the completion of the movement of said device in the second of said paths.
69. An employees time recorder, embodying impression-producing means, a controlling device having three movements two of which are in paths transverse to each other and the third of which is in a path transverse to the other two and governs impres sion, and a blocking-bar cooperative with said controlling device in all of the positions of said controlling device in one of said first two paths for preventing the impressioncontrolling movement of said controlling device until the completion of the movement of said device in the second of said paths crosswise of said blocking-bar.
70. An employees time recorder, comprising a casing, means for holding cards, a frame mounted within said casing and free to move relatively to said cards in two general directions crossing the faces thereof, revoluble printing wheels mounted upon said frame and provided with ordinals, electric mechanism for actuating said wheels step by step, an inking device for said wheels, a magnet for intermittently energizing said electric mechanism, and means controllable at will for bodily actuating said frame in such two general directions crossing each other.
71. An employees time recorder, embodying the following two main elements, viz. a blankcarrier and electrically operated time-recording means associated therewith and having type-wheels-one of which main elements is movable in a plurality of different paths across the face of the other and one of which is also movable toward the other to form an impression.

An employees time recorder, embodying the following two main elements, viz.- a blank carrier and electrically operated time-recording means associated therewith and having type-wheelsone of which main elements is movable in a plurality of different paths across the face of, the other and is also movable toward the other to form an impression.

An employees time recorder, embodying the following two main elements, viz. a blank-carrier and time-recording means associated therewith and having type-wheels the rotation of which is controlled electrically by means outside said time-recorder and forming no part thereof one of which main elements is movable in a path across the face of the other and one of which is movable in another path across the face of the other and one of which is also movable toward the other to form an impression.

An employees time recorder, embodying the following two main elements, viz. a blank-carrier and time-recording means associated therewith and having type-wheels the rotation of which is controlled electrically by means outside said time-recorder and forming no part thereofone of which main elements is movable in a plurality of difit'erent paths across the face of the other and one of which is also movable toward the other to form an impression.
75. An employees time recorder, embody ing the following two main elements, ViZ.-- a blank-carrier and clock-operated time-1e cording means associated therewith and having type-wheels-one of which main elements is movable in a plurality of different paths across the face of the other and is also movable toward the other to form an impression.
76. In combination, a printing mechanism, a card-holder therefor, said printing mechanism and said card holder being relatively movable in perpendicular directions and means for regulating the position of one of said cooperative elements with reference to the other such that impressions on a card carried by said card-holder may be spaced by such means in successive longitudinal and transverse columns.
77. In an e-mployees time recorder, a movable record locating element common to a plurality of workmen, and means individual to each workman and controlled by the separate recording operations of the workman to which said means is appropriated, for positively stopping said movable element in different printing positions corresponding to the difierent operations of the time-recorder by such workman.
78. In a wo-rkmans time-recorder, and in combination, an imprint element and a support for an imprint-receiving element, said parts having relative movement for providing substantially equidistant spaces between successive imprints, or entries, and independent means individual to the separate workmen for controlling the spacing movement.

In a time-recorder for a plurality of workmen, an imprintmaking element, a support for an imprint-receiving element, said imprint-making elementand support having relative movement variable distances in parallel paths, and means for controlling such movements including a plurality of parts individual to each path.

In a time-recorder for a plurality of workmen, an imprint -making element, a support for an imprint-receiving element, said imprint-making element and support having relative movement variable distances in parallel paths, and means for controlling such movements including a plurality of parts individual to each path, said parts be-- ing movable into ineffective positions one at a time.

In a time-recorder for a plurality of workmen, an imprint-making element, a support for an imprint-receiving element, said imprint-making element and support having relative movement variable distances in parallel paths, means for controlling such movements including a plurality of parts individual to each path, said parts being movable into inoperative positions one at a time, and means for restoring the parts to operative positions.
84. In a time-recorder for a plurality of workmen, an imprint making element, a support for an imprint-receiving elementhaving record spaces individual to the workmen, said elements having relative movement for efiectin-g spacing between the entries made in each record space, and
means for controlling such movement, in-
cluding a series of displaceable parts associated with each record space, and means for restoring the displaced parts to their initial positions.
85. In a timerecorder for a plurality of workmen, an imprint-making element, a support for an imprint-receiving element having record spaces individual to the workmen, said elements having relative movement for efiecting spacing between the entries in each record space, and means for controlling such movement including a series of displaceable parts and a cooperating member designed to be arrested by and to displace said parts, and a single part cooperating in one movement with all of the displaced members for restoring the same to initial positions.
86. In a time-recorder for a plurality of workmen, an imprint-making element, a support for an imprint-receiving element having spaces individual to the workman, a hand-operated part operatively connected for shifting one of the elements for bringing the imprintelement and a selected space into alinement, and for moving the parts relatively in a second direction for bringing the imprint element and a predetermined portion of the selected space into registration, said parts also having relative movement in a third direction for printing, and mechanical means for controlling the extent of said second movement, said means having parts which are shifted in one of said movements of the parts.
87. In a workmans time recorder, a printing couple comprising a support for a record-receiving element having a space for receiving a plurality of spaced apart imprints and an imprint-making element, the members of the couple having relative movement for bringing the same into proper printing relation, and means for determining such relation, including a group of dis placeable parts automatically displaceable by the manual movement of one of said members of the printing couple.
88. In a workmens time-recorder for a plurality of workmen, a support for a record-receiving element having record spaces individual to the workmen for receiving a plurality of spaced apart imprints, an imprint-making element, and means for determining the positions of the imprints in each record space, said means including a separate group of displaceable parts inclividual to each workman, and means for displacing the .parts of each group in succession, the order in which said parts are displaced being beyond the control of the workman.
89. In a workmens time-recorder for a plurality of workmen, an imprint-making element, a support for an imprint-receiving element having-record spaces individual to the workmen for receiving a plurality of entries individual to him, and means for determining the positions of the imprints in each space, said means including a plurality of displaceable parts individual to each space, each of such parts corresponding to a predetermined position of an imprint, and means for displacing said parts.
90. In a workmens time-recorder, an imprint-making element, a support for an imprint-receiving element designed to receive a plurality of entries spaced apart, and means for determining the spacing including a plurality of automatically shiftable no-n-clock-controlled displaceable parts, each part corresponding to an entry-receiving space, and means for displacing the parts through the operation of the recorder by a workman.
91. In a time-recorder for a plurality of men, an imprint element, a support for an imprint-receiving element having spaces individual to the men, means tending to hold said elements in a position of rest, or initial position, a handle movable into independent positions complemental to said spaces for bringing any space and imprint element into alinement, said handle having an additional movement when in any one of said individual positions, said imprint element and sup port having relative movement away from said position of rest and in a direction lengthwise of the alined space when the handle is given the additional movement, and means for determining the extent of said lengthwise movement including a plurality of parts individual to each individual position of the handle and operating for controlling the movement when the handle occupies a position complemental thereto.
92. In a workmens time-recorder for imprinting on a receiving surface a plurality of entries spaced apart, a spacing mechanism comprising a plurality of parts, each part being complemental to an individual entry-receiving point on said surface, and a cooperating member common to all of said parts designed to be arrested by and operating for moving the parts out of operative positions individually.
93. In a Workmans time-recorder for imprinting on a receiving surface a plurality of entries spaced apart, and including a printing couple, a spacinginechanism comprising a plurality of displaceable parts, each complemental to an individual entryreceiving point on said surface, and a cooperating element common to all of said displaceable parts and fixed relative to a shiftable member of the printing couple, said member of the printing couple being shiftable in a direction for effecting spacing, and said element in such movement being arrested by the displaceable parts and operating thereon for shift-ing the part-s individually out of arresting position.
94. In a time-recorder, a printing couple comprising members relatively movable for spacing between successive imprints, a plurality of parts each complemental to an individual imprint position, and a device associated with one member of the couple and coacting with said parts for positioning the members of the couple, said device also act ing to successively shift the parts out of 'efiective positions, and means for restoring the displaced parts to effective positions.
95. In a timerecorder, a printing couple comprising elements relatively movable for spacing between successive imprints, a plurality of parts each complemental to an individual imprint position, means for shifting said parts out of effective positions, and a plate movable about an axis for restoring the displaced parts to their initial positions.
96. In a time-recorder, a printing couple comprising elements-relatively movable for spacing between successive imprints, a plurality of parts each complemental to an individual imprint position, means for shifting said parts out of effective positions, and a plate movable toward and from the parts for restoring the displaced parts to their initial positions.
97. In a time-recorder, a printing couple comprising elements relatively movable for spacing between successive imprints, a plurality of parts each complemental to an individual imprint position, means for shifting said parts out of effective positions, and means for moving the plate into engagement with the displaced parts for restoring the same to their initial positions.
98. In a time-recorder, a printing couple comprising elements relatively movable for spacing between successive imprints, a plurality of parts each complemental to an individual imprint position, means for shift ing said parts out of effective positions, a restoring plate for said parts and means for bringing the plate in a single movement thereof into engagement with a plurality of displaced parts for restoring the same to their initial positions.
99. I11 a recorder for printing on a single sheet entries of a plurality of men in spaces individual to the men, and with the successive entries of each man separated from one another, an impression making element, and an element carrying an impression receiving surface, the elements having relative movement in one direction for alining any selected space and the impression making element, and having relative movement in a second direction for effecting said spacing between successive entries, a manual operatively connected for effecting said relative movements, and a mechanism for cont-rolling the extent of said second relative movement.
100. In a recorder for printing on a single sheet entries of a plurality of men in spaces individual to the men, and with the successive entries of each man separated from one another, an impression making element, and an element carrying an impression receiving surface, the elements having relative movement in one direction for alining any selected space and the impression making element, and having relative movement in a second direction for effectingsaid spacing between successive entries, a manual operatively connected for effecting said relative movements, and a mechanism for controlling the extent of said second relative movement, said mechanism including a plurality of parts individual to each workman.
101. In a recorder for printing on a single sheet entries of a plurality of men in spaces individual to the men, and with the successive entries of each man separated from one another equidistantly, an impression making element, and an element carrying an impression receiving surface, the elements having relative movement in one direction for registering any selected space and the impression making element, and having relative movement in a second direction for effecting said spacing between successive entries, a manual operatively connected for effecting said relative movements, and a mechanism for controlling the extent of said second movement including means individual to each man, and a device common to all of the men cooperating with the individual means.
102. In a recorder, an impression making element, and a second element for holding an impression receiving surface, a manual operatively connected for effecting a relative movement of said elements in one direction, or path, from an initial position, and means for controlling the extent of said movement so that under each successive actuations of said manual by the same work man the range of said relative movement will be increased.
103. In a recorder, an impression making element, and a second element for holding an impression receiving surface, a manual operatively connected for effecting a relative movement of said elements in one direction, or pat-h, from an initial position, and means for controlling the extent of said movement so that under each successive actuations of said manual by the same workman the range of said relative movement will be increased, and means for restoring the said elements to said initial position after each recording operation.
104:. In a recorder, an impression making element, and a second element for holding an impression receiving surface, a manual operatively connected for effecting a relative movement of said elements in one direction or path from an initial position, and means for so controlling the extent of said movement that under successive actuations of said manual, by the same workman, the range of said relative movement will be increased, said means including a member movable with one of said elements and a plurality of cooperating parts displaceable by said member.
105. In combination, the printing mechanism, a card-holder therefor, a relatively fixed group of stops controlling the movement of one of said cooperative elements in one direction, by which stops the relation in said direction between the printing mechanism and the card-holder can be determined, means controlling the movement of the same cooperative element in a direction transverse to its said first movement, and means for changing the positions of said stops whereby they are successively brought into position longitudinally of the holder.
106. In combination, the printing mechanism, a card-holder therefor, a relatively fixed group of stops controlling the movement of one of said cooperative elements in one direction and adapted to cooperate separately with said printing mechanism and card holder to determine the relation in said direction between the printing mechanism and a card in said holder and means controlling movement of the same cooperative element in a direction transverse to its said first movement.
107. In combination, the printing mechanism, a card-holder therefor, a relatively fixed group of stops controlling the movement of one of said cooperative elements in one direction and adapted to cooperate separately with said printing mechanism and card-holder to determine the relation in said direction between the printing mecha nism and a card in said holder, means controlling movement of the same cooperative element in a direction transverse to its said first movement and: means for bringing said stops into action at determined intervals.
108. In combination, the printing mechanism, a card-holder therefor, a relatively fixed group of stops controlling the movement of one of said cooperative elements in one direction and adapted to cooperate separately with said printing mechanism and card-holder to determine the relation in said. direction between the printing mechanism and a card in said holder, means controlling movement of the same cooperative element in a direction transverse to its said first movement and means for bringing said stops into action successively.
109. In a device of the class described, in
combination with the printing mechanism and the card-holder in operative relation thereto, a plurality of stops spaced longi- I tudinally and transversely and controlling; a movement of one of said cooperative ele-' first mentioned relation between the printing mechanism and a card in the cardholder.
110. In a time recorder, printing mechanism, a card-holder, a relatively fixed group? of stops controlling the movement of one of said cooperative elements in one direction and located outside the cardholder, means controlling movement of the same cooperative element in a direction transverse to its said first movement and means for separately moving said steps into position to determine the first mentioned relation between the printing mechanism and a card in said holder.
111. In a time recorder, the combination of a time-controlled stamp, a card-holder in operative relation to said stamp, a relatively fixed group of abutments controlling the movement of one of said cooperative elements in one direction and movement between the card-holder and said stamp, said abutments serving to permit the stamp to print at different points on the card, and means controlling movement of the same cooperative element in a direction transverse to its said first movement.
112. In a time recorder, the combination with a time stamp, of a card-holder, a relatively fixed group of stops controlling the movement of one of said cooperative elements in one direction and to successively vary the relation between the time stamp and a card in said card-holder, means controlling movement of the same cooperative element in a direction transverse to its said first movement and means to bring one stop after another into operative position.
113. The combination with a time stamp, of an upright card-holder, means to gradually vary the effective depth thereof, said means controlling the movement of one of said cooperative elements in one direction and including a relatively fixed group of members adapted to cooperate one by one with said card-holder, mechanism to render said members operative in succession, and means controlling movement of the same cooperative element in a direction transverse to its said first movement.
114C. The combination, with a time stamp, 01'? a card-holder adjacent thereto, a series of stops located in parallel planes at right angles to the card-holder and individually movable to determine the printing position, and means to render said stops operative one by one in regular sequence.
