THOMAS MCBRIDE, OF. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND EBENEZER FISHER, OF KINOARDINE, CANADA.
SPECTACLE-BRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,364, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed April 80, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS -MCBRIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, and EBENEZER FISHER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and residing in the city of Kincardine, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spectacles; and we do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spectacles, it being the object of such improvements to provide the bridge of the spectacles with a supplemental piece which shall serve a nose-guard and prevent the bridge from cutting into the nose of the wearer by means of being pivoted to "the bridge, and therefore allows oscillation on the nose.
The invention consists in providing the bridge on its under side with an oscillating arch pivoted to the lower portion of the bridge on each side, whereby it accommodates itseltto the peculiarity of the nose, finding its own proper centcr,thus doing away with the reddening or lacerating the skin of the nose, said reddening or lacerating being produced by the rigidity of the spectaclebridge; and the invention further consists in certain other novel features in the arrangement and construction of parts, all as hereinafter explained, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front viewof a pair of eyeglasses provided with the oscillating under arch, the said arch being shown in section to disclose the pivots. Referring to the drawings by letter, A indicates the bridge forming a portion of the spectacle-frame, and is of the usual construction and may be formed either of a rigid or flexible arch. On the under side of the sta- Serial No. 391,144. a model.)
tacles turn when beingadjusted to suit the wearer, and by reason of this central axis y y the weight of the spectacles is balanced, so that when placed on the nose the arch b will properly adjust itself to the peculiarity ot' the nose.
The bridge A may be formed of metal in former use. Arch 6 may be formed of celluloid, gutta-percha, aluminum, gold, or silver or other smooth-surfaced and light material, and the same perforated, as at c, to permit a circulation of air .thereth rough.
In Fig. 2, B and A show the pivot of the lower points of the arch, which allow the arch to oscillate and find its own center and resting place, which produces harmony, peace, and happiness to the nose.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the bridge of a pair of spectacles, of an under arch pivoted at its ends to the lower portion of the bridge, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. An arch pivoted to the bridge of spectacles for the purpose of allowing the arch to oscillate and find its own proper center and resting-place,
The combination, with the bridge of a pair of spectacles, of an under arch pivoted at its ends to the lower portion of bridge, the said under arch being perforated to admit of the circulation of air, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
