tain new and useful Improvements inDies for Makingr Links for Sprocket-Chains; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, vsuch as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the' Same.
My inventiru relates to the manufacture of sprocket-chains for driving sprocket wheels ,-orpulleys; and my improvement is directed 130 tlreproduction ofthe intermediate or pinbearlngllinks of such chain from a strip of steel quickly, easily, accurately, uniformly,

Itis essential to good i results that the holes for the pins shall in everylcase be of exactly the same distance from center to center, that they shall be exactly parallel through the link, and that they shall be at exact rightangles with fits outer parallel sides; audit is for the manufacture of such chain-link parts to obtain these results that- I have devised the dies and the mode of using them to produce the intermediate orpin-bearing links, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

From these dies the partially-formed link is removed, the bit taken out and replaced by l pinsfmone in each partially-closed end, which are of the exact diameter of the pins used in j connecting the links of the chain, and this partially-formed link is placed vin the finishing-dies shown in Fig. 3, wherein the intagliof the link, thus forming theholcs of perfect circles, in perfect parallel relation-and at right angles to the outer sides ot the link, which are the im portant requirements of a sprocketf chain. in `this finishing operation the `iiat faces of the ridges d d of the intaglio-reeess and of the relieftongue'are coincident and form the web or flat part of the link in the center line of its holes, so thatl the greatest strength shall be obtained in the line of thel greatest strain ou the linkv and the bearing shall be equal at all sideson the pins. The recess in the'intaglilodie is preferably open at each end for convenience in placing and removing the link being formed.
As a means of preserving the parallelism of the iinkunder the various operations, removable plates may be provided to close one or both ends of the recess, as seen in Fig. 4.

The die-formed chain-link, prpduced as de-. scribed and to obtain the advantages stated, is a new article ot manufacture, so `far as I know and can find.
