UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HIRSOH, OF CENTRE, OHIO.
FLOOD-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters I atent No. 461,114, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed May 13, 1891- Serial No. 392,595. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Hmson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centre, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Flood-Gate, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in flood-gates; and it has for its object to provide a simply constructed and operating gate that will readily open with the rise of water and close with the fall of the same; and it consists of a specially-constructed gate-operating device hereinafter more fully explained, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is an innerperspective of aflood-gate constructed in accordance with myinvention, thegates being in their normal position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my improved flood-gate, the gates being open.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by'letter, A A designate the side posts, )rovided with the usual extended portions to a, that are adapted to be driven in the ground to hold the frame-Work securely anchored thereon. The said side posts are connected together by the upper and lowerbraces B and B, respectively, against which the gates C, hinged to the side posts by the ordinary hinges c, are designed to rest in their closed position. The gatesO are constructed of the ordinary material and in the ordinary manner and are designed to be swung open and closed, according to the rise and fall of the water. On the side of the posts A A opposite the sides on which the gates are hinged and at their lower extremities at the bottom of the gates are hinged the converging arms D D, that meet in a point and are suitably braced together by the connecting brace and weight (1, forming a triangular frame, the same being designed to act as a weight for holding the gates in their closed position.
Chains or ropes E connect said triangular gate-operatin g weight with the gates by means of eyebolts or staples c, secured in the free ends of both of the gates and in the diverging arms of the triangular frame near their meeting points.
It is thought that the operation of this gate will be apparent from the foregoing description. As the water from the flood or enlarged stream strikes the said triangular frame the same rises up and assumes a vertical posit-ion, bearing against the cross-braces connecting the side posts, and permits the gates to be thrown open by the water and allow the same a free and unobstructed passage-way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a tloodgate, the combination, with the swinging gates, of an open triangular frame hinged to the gate-posts at their lower extremities, and chains or ropes connecting said gates and said triangularframe, substantially as set forth.
2. In a floodgate, the combination, with the gate-posts and cross-braces, of the outwardlyswinging gates hinged to said posts, converging arms hinged to the posts at their lower extremities, the same meeting in a point and held together by a cross-brace, and chains or ropes connected to the upper edges of each gate and the extremities of said converging arms, substantially as set forth.
'lhe combinatiomwith the swinginggates, of converging wooden beams hinged to the gate-posts, and ropes or chains connecting said beams to the gates, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH HIRSCH.
