UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEW'IS A. ROBERTS, OF CARBONDALE, ASSIGNOR OF 'lWYO-THIRDS TO T. H. TVATTS AND V. J. VATTS, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IGNITING DEVICE FOR LANTERNS OR LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 461,048, dated October 13, 1891. 7
Application filed January 7, 1891, Serial No. 377,007. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern; may be appliedto any lantern or lamp of or- Be it known that l, LEWIS A. ROBERTS, of dinary construction. Carbondale,in the county of Lackawanna and Referring to the drawings, A indicates the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain oil-reservoir or base of the lantern; B, the 55 new and useful Improvementsin lgnitingDewick-tube; C, the wick; and D the chamber vices for Lanterns or Lamps; and I do here-. beneath the burner, with which the tube E by declare the following to be a full, clear, communicates to supply warm air for comand exact description of the same, reference bustion. being had to the accompanying drawings, Fitting over and seated on the chamber D 60 m forming a part of this specification, and to is the usual burner-cone F, having a notch in the letters of reference marked thereon. its lower edge for the passage of the shaft of This invention relates to that class of dethe wick-raising wheel and a platform or envices in which an ignitor (match) or series of largement slightly below the slot, upon which ignitors mounted on a suitable carrier are the gallery G for the globe seats. This gal- 6 I 5 brought in succession into proximity with the lery G is capable of being rotated on the cone Wick of a lantern or lamp and automatically and. constitutes the carrier for the ignitors. ignited at the proper moment, thereby light- The holders or carriers proper g consistsiming the lantern or lamp, said parts being all ply of small tubular pieces, preferably formed inclosed within the globe or lantern-casing, integral on a ring g, being mounted thereon 70 and therefore not subjected to the action of around the central opening, through which side winds or external influences, such an arthe cone projects. Handles or projections H ran gement being shown, for instance, in my may be provided on or attached to the gallery patent, N0. l1-l,889, dated November 12, 1889. for convenience in rotating the same.
The invention consists, broadly stated, in a On the side of the cone, at one end of the 75 carrierfor the ignitors, rotating in a horizonslot and in position to co-operate with the tal plane, and a horizontal friction-surface loends of the iguitors projecting inward from cated in proximity to the igniting-point of the the carrier, is the friction surface or piece I. wick and movable vertically with relation to Thus it will be seen that when the gallery and the carrier, whereby the proper degree of friccarriers are rotated the ignitors are brought 80 0 tion maybe secured between the ignitors and successively into contact with the frictionfriction-surface without danger of breakingsurface and ignited at a point in proximity to the ignitors, and, finally, it consists in certain the wick, thereby lighting the same without novel details of construction and combinadanger of having the ignitors extinguished tions and arrangements of parts to be hereinby external influences. 8 5 3 5 after described, and pointed out in the claims The friction-surface and carrier, it will be at the end of this specification. seen, are both arranged in ahorizontal plane,
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is and in order to secure the best results it is dea perspective view of the bottom portion of a sirable that they should be movable vertically tubular lantern having my invention applied with relation to each other, in order that an 0 4o thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is even pressure may be exerted on the ignitors a vertical section. Fig. at shows a modified in passing over the friction-surface, and, furform of friction-surface. Fig. 5 is a detail ther, that the friction-surface should be inperspective view of the burner-cone, showing clined slightly, so that the ignitors will travel the friction -surface and spring supporting up the same until the pressure increases suifi- 5 armsciently to set them off at the proper point. Like letters of reference in the different fig- In the preferred construction, and as shown, ures denote the same parts. the carrier is designed to remain at the same I have deemed it expedient in the present level and the friction-surface I is mounted on instance to show the igniting mechanism as spring-arms i, secured by solder or otherwise I00 applied to a tubular lantern of the popular to the sides of the cone, the said surface becheap type but it will be understood that it ing inclined in both direct-ionsin order to Set d the ignitors when moving in either direction.
By arranging the carriers proper g in a cirdo around the burner-cone it will be seen at a glance that the construction of the device is exceedingly simple, requiring no change in the lamps or lanterns of ordinary construction, and when out of contact with the triotion surface the ignitors are removed far enough from theheated metal or wick to prevent their accidental ignition therefrom.
If desired, the friction-surface may be se' cured directly to the cone, as shown in Fig. 4, and the gallery be permitted to move vertically a very slight distance as the ignitors ride up said surface, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In an igniting device for lamps, the combination, with the wick tube or opening, of the horizontally-arranged and vertically-movable friction-surface and the horizontally-rotatable ignitor-carrier, substantially as described.
2. In an igniting device for lamps, the combination, witlrthe friction-surface mounted on spring-arms, of a horizontally-rotatable carrier, substantially as described.
3. In an igniting device for lamps, the combination, with the burner-cone having the Wick-opening therein and the friction-surface secured thereon, of the globe-gallery mounted on said cone and the ignitor-carrier thereon, substantially as described.
4t. In an igniting device for lamps, the combination, with the removable cone having the central slot or opening for the wick, the enlargement or bearing below the same, and the friction-surface at one end of the wick-opening, of the globe-gallery mounted on said bearing and the carriers thereon, substantially as described.
5. In an igniting device for lamps, the combination, with the burner-cone and frictionsurface, of the ignitor-carriers mounted on and revolving around said cone, substantiali y as described.
6. In an igniting device for lamps, the combination, with the burner-cone having the central wick-opening, with the enlargement or bearing below the same, and the friction Surface mounted on spring-arms secured 'to the sides of the cone, of the globe-gallerymounted on said enlargement or hearing, the
handles or projections on said gallery, and the ignitor carriers mounted on said gallery around the central opening for the cone, substantially as described.
