'L. A.. EOUL'LEY, or Eosfrou, MASSACHUSETTS,
APPARATUS FOR CUTTINGPHOTOGRAPHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 46,099. dated J anun-ry 3.11l6tv To all 4whom it 'may concern, -l Be it known that I, L. AV.' FOULLEY, of Bos- 1 l ton,ii1 the county (if-Suffolk and Sta-te ofi .exact-.specifi cation of thesa nuawherein .l have set forth the nature and principles of my said 1 improvements, by which my invention may be i distinguished from all others of a similar 1 class, together with such parts as I claim and i desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The mode heretofore practiced of cutting out the diti'erent forms ot' paper, &c .-sucli as ovals,circles,&c.-for photographs, pass-pa rtout frames, and other similar articleshas ,j been to lay a s-.iitable pattern of sheet metal upon -the paper to be eut,- holding the saine with one hand or by means ot' weights while the cutting is performed with the other; but this requires great care, as both the pattern and paper are liable to slip, and cousequeutl)Y the process is a slow one. The present inventon consists in a new apparatus for el'fectiiig.,r the desired result, the pattern being firmly held or clamped upon the paper while the latter-is being cnt4 into the desired forni, so that neither can slip nor inoye, whereby the work l can be Vmuch more rapidly done `and with greater certainty than heretofore.
. My new apparatus is represented in the acooinpanying plate of drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view represeutingthc two parts thereof opened. Fig. 2 is a vertical sec- .tioii showing lthe apparatus closed. shows the apparatus partially open. v
a a (t in the drawings represent a box containing a bed ot pasteboard, b b, upon which v is placed a glass plate. Oijerihe latter laid the paper c c to be cut. *',lo the boi; a. (t (o is hinged a'cover, d d, to which is fastened,by buttons c c, so as tobe` readily inserted in or removed therefrom, a i'ranie,'f /11 Suitable ways, g g, attached to the sides ot'this frame. hold the` pattern li h, which isv vinserted byk simply sliding,` it in betweenthe-ways'g g and the t'ranieff.v i y From this vdescription it 'will be seen that when the coi'ercontaiiiiiie"the pattern is sluit,
2 and held down by clainps,`,1iooks, or otherwise, the pattern will beA rigidly pressed upon the surf'aecto be eut, so that neither itnor the paper oanppossiblyslip while the knife is being passed aronndfhe edge ot' the oval 'i lt will beobvious that the pattern 'Ii h can be re- Y nioredandvarious othershaped ones inserti d at' pleasure. The object, when cut, can lie |i1icklV removed and another one inserted by simply unclamping the cover and bringing, the parts into the position shown in Fig. l.
Haviug'thus described iny improvements, whatl c-laii'n as my invention, andv desire to vhave secured to-m'e 'by Letters Patent, is-
Thc apparatus herein described t'or cutting photographic pictures, passis-partout frames,
i die., arrangei'l vand operatingr sustautially as l described.
