STEAM-SHOVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 460,973, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed April 20, 1891. Serial No. 389,656. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, GEORGE WV. KING, of Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Shovels; andIdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in excavators, and more particularly to improved means for supporting or bracing the boom and guiding the lifting-chain.
The object of my invention is to so construct the machine that the boom will be properly supported and whereby said boom may be swung at right angles or less than right angles to the car without obstruction.
A further object is to construct the machine in such manner that the devices attached to the car for supporting the forward end of the boom shall operate in the same vertical plane as the axis of the turn-table which supports it.
A further objectis to provide improved devices whereby the raising-chain will be prevented from displacement and made to remain and pass over the sheaves regardless of the angles to which the boom is swung.
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in the co nbination, with a swinging boom, of a pivoted yoke or frame supported by the machine, guiding devices in proximity to the axis of said yoke or frame, and guiding devices mounted in the forward end of the yoke.
The invention also consists in the combination, with a swinging boom and a pivoted yoke or frame supported by the machine, of sheaves mounted 1'11 proximity to the axis of said yoke, and sheaves mounted in the free end of the yoke or frame and having their axes at right angles to the axes of the firstmentioned sheaves.
The invention also consists in the combination, with a swinging boom, of a pivoted yoke or frame supported by the machine, the axis of said yoke or frame being in line with the axis on which the boom swings, sheaves in proximity to the axis of said yoke or frame, and sheaves carried by the free end of the yoke or frame.
The invention also consists in the combination, in an excavator, of a boom mounted on the forward end thereof, and means for supporting the forward end of the boom from the forward end of the machine.
The invention also consists in the combination, with an excavator and a boom, of an extension secured to the excavator, and a brace connected at its forward end to the forward end of the boom and at its rear end pivotally connected to said extension.
The invention also consists in the combination, with a car suitably braced and a boom or derrick, of an extension secured to said car, and a brace connected at its forward end to the forward end of the boom and at its rear end pivotallyconnected to said extension.
The invention also consists in the combination, with a car, a boom connected thereto, and a shovel, of an extension secured to said car, a yoke carried by said extension and adapted to have a swinging movement, a sheave mounted in said yoke, a sheave or sheaves in the forward end of the boom, and a raising-chain connected with the shovel and passed over said sheaves in the boom and the sheave in the yoke; and the invention also consists in certain novel features of constree tion and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation ofa car embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same on an enlarged scale. Figs. 3 and at are views of modifications.
A represents a car-frame comprising longitudinal timbers or metal beams a a, crosstimbers or metal beams a and vertical timbers or metal beams (L The cross-timbers and vertical timbers are securely braced together and tied together by means of a series of rods 1), as shown in Fig. 1, and the frame of the car is preferably further braced and tied together at the top by means of braces or ties 1). Located on the top of the crosstimbers a are two timbers or beams B B, disposed in Vshape, the apex of the frame thus formed being adapted to extend forwardly beyond the forward end of the top of the car. The V-shaped frame A formed by the timbers B B, is securelybraced to the cross-timbers a and extends rearwardly, preferably somewhat more than half the length of the car, and is connected to the bottom of the car, at the end thereof, by means of tie-rods (1 Located on top of the car and on the frame A is a frame F, composed of heavy timbers and adapted to extend to the apex of the frame- A said frame being securely braced to the frame of the car and secured together at its apex by means of stout plate a. The frame F is further secured to the car-frame by means of tie-rods cl (2. Mounted in the forward end of the frame F is a vertical shaft G, adapted to be braced at its top by means of a brace G, secured to the frame F, said brace or braces being connected to the car-frame by means of tie-rods d Connected to the plate 0, preferably near its top, is a yoke or frame H, to which one end of a brace-rod I is attached, the other end ofsaid brace-rod being provided with a yoke or fork I, the free ends of which are secured to the forward end of a boom J. The boom J is mounted on a turntable J in the usual manner, said turn-table being mounted on the bottom of the car, at theforward end thereof, .and having its axis in the same vertical plane with the shaft G. Connected to the shaft G and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane as said shaft turns is a bracket K, in which a roller or sheave e is mounted, and in the forward end of the frame A horizontal rollers e are mounted. Rollers or sheaves e are mounted in the forward end of the boom, and there is also a sheave 6 within the car. Over these sheaves a chain L is passed, one end of said chain being attached to the drum M and the other end to a shovel N, secured to a beam 0, carried by the boom. By providing the bracket K and sheave e and connecting it with the shaft G said sheave e will always be maintained in proper position relatively to the sheaves in the forward end of the, boom regardless of the position to which the boom swings, and consequently the raising-chain will always be in proper workinp position.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 3 a shaft 1 is projected upwardly from and made to rotate with the turn-table, said shaft being maintained in proper upright position by means of timbers 2, projecting from the car. Loosely mounted on the shaft 1, immediately under the timber 2, is a bracket 3, to which one end of a brace-rod 4: is attached, the other end of said brace-rod being attached to the forward end of the boom, as above explained. A sleeve 5 is also mounted on the shaft above the timber 2 and carries an arm 5, on which a roller or sheave 6 is mounted, said sleeve being braced and held rigid from rotation with the shaft by means of braces 7, extending down to the bottom of the car. The sleeve 5 is provided with flanges 8, which are adapted to receive sheaves 9, which are journaled thereon. Secured to and carried by the upper end of the shaft 1 and adapted to span the sleeve 5 is a yoke or frame 10, similar to the yoke or frame F, above referred to, in the free end of which sheaves 11 11 are mounted. Over or between these rollers or sheaves the lifting-chain is adapted to pass in the same manner as above described.
Fig. 4: illustrates the invention as applicable to a dredger. In this case the pivoted yoke and the sheaves for the accommodation of the lifting-chain are supported by an elevated bracket or frame 12. In order to supply a support for the brace-rod which supports the forward end of the boom an upright 13 is located at the forward end of the dredger and braced by a suitable brace 14. At the upper end of the frame thus formed is a loop or eye 15, adapted to receive the inner end of the tie-rod which supports the forward end of the boom. The bracket or frame which supports the eye or loop 15 is so disposed that said loop or eye will be directly over the pivoted frame 10.
Numerous slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a braced car, of a frame secured to the top thereof and adapted to extend beyond the forward end of said car,
a boom carried by said car, a vertical shaft carried by said extension, a yoke or bracket projecting from said shaft, and a brace connected at one end to said yoke or bracket and at the other end connected to the forward 'end of the boom, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, witha car and a boom carried thereby, of a frame secured to the top thereof and adapted to project beyond the forward end thereof, braces extending from the ends of said frame to the end of the car, another frame on the first-mentioned frame and adapted to extend beyond the forward end of the car, a vertical shaft mounted in said last-mentioned frame, and a brace connecting said shaft with the forward end of the boom, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a car, a boom connected thereto, and a shovel, of an extension secured to said car, a shaft carried by said extension, a yoke carried by said shaft, a sheave carried by the yoke, sheaves in the forward end of the boom, and a raising-chain c011- nected to the shovel and passing over the sheaves in the boom and the sheave in the yoke, substantially as set forth.
4:. -The combination, with acar, aboom, and a shovel, of an extension secured to the top of the car, sheaves mounted in said extension, a shaft also mounted in the extension, a yoke carried by said shaft, a sheave mounted in said yoke, and a chain connected to said shovel and passing over said sheaves, substantially as set forth. 535. In an excavator, the combination, with a swinging boom and a pivoted yoke or frame supported by the machine,of sheaves mounted in proximity to the axis of said yoke, and sheaves mounted in the free end of the yoke and having their axes at right angles to those of the first-mentioned sheaves, substantially as set forth.
6. In an excavator, the combination, with a swinging boom and apivoted yoke or frame carrying sheaves for the accommodation of the raising-chain, of a brace connected at one end to the free end of the boom and loosely connected at its other end at a point in line with the axis of the pivoted frame and the ing witnesses.
